Default GPS vs. Plotter

This may sound dumb but I'm new to electronics.
Is there a difference between a plotter and gps? If yes is it worth having both? I'm looking at Furuno units that combine a plotter with radar but I do have Garmins GPS map 162.
Any help here would be great.

Default GPS vs. Plotter

the 162 is considered a chart plotter. It will position your boat on the chart and update it as you move.

A plain old gps only has a numerical display. You need to constantly determine on the paper chart just exactly where you are. A pain in the butt.

furuno's radar may not overlay the radar video ontop of the chart display. You need to look and verify that it does this. If it doesnt overlay it, it will split the screen in 2. One part for the chart plotter (no different than the garmin 162) and the other half for the radar display.
