Default JVC Worst customer service !!!!!!! Rant

I bought a JVC Marine grade stereo for my CC. The stereo had a plastic type wrap that said "moisture barrier". The stereo was installed in March and started giving me problems in July. The rear of the stereo is in the console and the face is behind a clear plexi cover.

After about 5 calls of getting nowhere with a JVC operator telling me that I "might not be using the controls properly" I was directed to take the stereo to a local repair shop.... OK, Im at the repair shop and they tell me that it will be fixed in "about a week". So its 8 weeks later and I stop by to find out what the problem is. Nobody knows what or where my stereo is.........Now Im P.O.'ed.......... I get a call later from the "tech" who tells me that the stereo has moisture damage and it "doesn't look like they are going to cover it" he also tells me that I should have not mounted it in a boat........... I ask him about the "moisture barrier" and the fact that the unit is sold FOR A BOAT, and he has no answer....

Still no word on my stereo..............

Long story short, I will never buy another JVC product, The customer service is HORRIBLE!

JVC should not sell products made for boats if they are not going to stand behind their products.

Next time buy a car stereo receiver. Get the extended warrantee. If it fails take it back to the store and they will repair or replace it. You will get a lot more bang for the buck purchasing a car stereo instead of a marine one. I have my Sony receiver hooked up to a set of high quality Bose marine speakers. I also plug my Sirius Sat receiver into the system for great offshore reception.

Next time buy a car stereo receiver. Get the extended warrantee. If it fails take it back to the store and they will repair or replace it. You will get a lot more bang for the buck purchasing a car stereo instead of a marine one.
That's the advice I followed - I went to Best Buy in 2003 and got a JVC, installed it myself in the overhead electronics box. Salt spray and humidity ate the circuit board in 16 months. Best Buy sent it in and surprised me with a outright refusal to repair or replace, since it was water damaged. I screamed and hollered and had the manager refund my extended warranty cost, about $27.

Coincidently, I havent bought anything else from Best Buy since that experience, but I have purchased several hundred dollars of stuff from Fry's.

why should best buy cover something that wasnt used for its intended purpose? how can a CAR stereo manufacturer warranty something that was used in a marine environment? you people crack me up

I asked the stereo salesman what if any of his receivers he would recommend for use in a boat. He advised me to pick anyone; and to make sure I purchased the extended warrantee. The salesman made it clear that it did not make a difference whether it was installed in a boat or a car. I was up front about my intended application; and have had great results.

Ask how many Clarion CMD-4's and Aquatic AV's have gone bad and you wont find very many. These units hold up better than most units.

My experience with Best Buy has been poor also. They seem to be fine un til you buy something, and then they turn on you.

Great place to look and get ideas. Friendly salespeople. But go somewhere else to buy.

I went through 2 units in one summer, JBL's. The second one was the highest priced one Boaters World had, they did an even swap for my trouble. Well even with the waterproof case it went poof too..... I dont know if you will find a radio that will hold up, mine didnt even make it one season in the water proof shield

I did exactly the same. I bought a Kenwood head unit with the Sirius receiver and bought the extended warranty. I was very explicit when I bought it that it was being installed in a boat and would see salt water. When the head unit failed BB replaced it (not very promptly, but they did replace it). It turned out that the replacement head unit was incompatible with the Sirius receiver, so they replaced that also. No charge to me and they even renewed the extended warranty at the time of replacement for no extra charge.

There is a point where time is a factor. For example, two trips to a store to return the radio plus installing the new radio takes time (lets say 3 hours). Time is money and I would rather buy the radio that is most appropriate for the use and reduce the likelihood of wasting my time and creating more hassles later (plus not having to baby the equipment)

the problem with best buy and circuit city is that no two stores are consistent with what they will warranty. if you get a dousche bag manager with a bug up his ass he wont do anything for you. it doesnt matter what the salesperson says they will cover. read the fine print in the warranty packet. if they dont want to cover something for corrosion damage, they dont have to. if they warranty it, great.

I am a good and consistent customer of my local marine store (chain). I have gone through 3 JVC marine stereos over a 4 year period. I always saved the original box. When the units crapped out I took them back to my local chain marine store where I purchased it. I received a new JVC replacement radio each time with absolutely no hassle. Point is if you take care of the folks at your local marine store then they will (hopefully) take care of you. These stores receive lots of returns and they send them back to their warehouse. At the warehouse the factory reps are given the defective units or they are shipped back to the mfg. The mfg (JVC in this case) credits the chain without any hassle. JVC would not argue with one of their biggest customers. I have tried to call JVC in the past about problems and have had little help. I send Xmas cards to the mgr and some of the kids at the store. I also have sent letters to the El presidente of the chain when I receive exemplary service. These guys do not make a lot of bucks but I think it makes a difference in their lives when a customer takes time out to make compliment them.

topfish has it right, I used to work at a chain marine store and the average pay is $8 an hour, and the manager was making around $12, this was 4 years ago and I assume things have not changed too much in that time. They dont get enough money for the crap some people put them through. If your a good person to the people within the store they will take care of you in every manner they can, period.

Have a Clarion 3 years and no problems so far, they make marine quality radios, before them I went thru 2 radios in 1 year and I keep it in a electronics locker.

Model number KDG-210

Got my unit back after 3 months.. JVC returned the unit after doing nothing with it and all it says is "UNIT IS RUSTED ALL OVER, CANNOT REPAIR (CANCEL)" What does that mean? Does it mean that they wont stand by thier own warranty? I guess so!

JVC HAS THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE!
I will never buy another one of their products.
