Default Lowrance 3200 or Garmin 162

I am buying a new gps. It will either be a Garmin 162 or Lowrance 3200. Any advice on which is better?

I can't speak about those specific models, but as a general comment based on units I've owned in the past, I prefer the Garmin GPS user interface over the Lowrance - the Garmin was very easy to learn and simple to use.

I've got the Lowrance 3200 and highly recomend it. It's fast, easy to see and use. The built in map contains good detail and it also takes MMC cards for Navionics charts.

You can download a simulator to your computer from the Lowrance website to try the unit. The actual display is better than the simulator.

I will only speak about the Garmin, I have the 162 with internal antenna. The user interface is easy to use, can view the screen through all daylight conditions-clouds, sun. I got the BlueChart CD and love the ability to do all the work I want on the PC and upload to the unit. I have never had a problem with the unit, when I call/email questions their customer service has been great.

I agree with the above post on the garmin units. I also have the 162 with the blue chart and love it.

I think either unit would be good, but I would select the Garmin simply because of the interface and Mapsource software and firmware.

I have a 162/internal antenna and use it in both boat and truck. With the US Roads and Recreation maps from the CDROM I can find a particular street in a strange town, and with the Fishing Hotspota maps I can find structure and avoid hazards.

The Lowrance may be able to do both, but I doubt that the level of detail is better, or even as good as the Mapsource.
