Default GMR 41 and birds

I have a friend who is looking at installing a Garmin radar. One of the units being considered is the Garmin 41, has anyone used it to find birds?
Thanks, Team Ruby

I have the GMR 41 and like the radar. It does everything I need it to do. Gets me from point A to point B without smashing into something. Spotting birds - now way - no how. It just isn't a powerful enough unit to do that.

Salty_Dog, thanks for confirming what I had suspected. I had seen the question posted in other threads but never a response.

Thanks Glen, when I put this post up this morning I was disappointed to see you weren't online; I knew you had one. I then hoped you would eventually get to it and respond. As always, much appreciated.

I would bet you could use the Garmin open array for birds....

I have used a friends Furuno 4KW with an open array to find birds. It can work, but it works better with more power.
I don't know of any 4KW radar with a dome that can see birds at any distance.

Wolakrab, thanks, your post supports some information I had received earlier and was trying to confirm.

I have the garmin 41 dome with the 3210 and was able to clearly see birds at just over five miles. They were very clear. I was playing with the settings and kept having a major return but didnt see a ship. I had never watched it that close during the day. I would bet from the strong return that one could see them much further. Easy 7,8,9 miles. I used the overlay to measure it. The garmin is very clear. You can play with the settings to be less automatic and gain much clearer details. The auto settings are fine for just avoidance radar. I have been able to set the unit freq. to much better settings for further detail. Only problem is you cant tell what freq. your on when in manual mode. Just an up/down tab. I have called garmin to add this in further updates. I would also like user setable area for freq.

These birds you saw at over 5 miles with a 4kw dome...they had to be fat 20lb Thanksgiving turkeys, not gulls

Not sure why any of you wont take what I have to say as truth. Im not a fisherman, I dont claim to be. There were birds at just over five miles. There had to have been fifty or so. Tey were feeding. I had seen the blip on and off. It seemed to be in the same spot again and again. I turned the trails on and saw it wasnt moving. I then plotted a range to it and used binoculars. The range was just at 5 or 5.5 miles with the garmin overlay. I made note to this because you ppl are always talking about birds and radar. The ocean was almost flat, under a foot or so. When the blip would show, it was strong. Think whatever you want. I had a clear shot of them, and I know how to use radar.

Beachcomber, nothing personal;we're just having fun with you. The occasional "blip" showing birds at 5 miles or so is perhaps believable with a dome,I suppose. With an open array ,higher power radar you would see a steady cloud of birds on the screen at that distance. In circumstances where you couldn't use binoculars to verify birds (i.e. fog),you wouldn't want to go chasing an occasional blip. That's where the open array comes into play.
