Default Si-Tex 209 Repair - What Do You Think?

Recently my 209 sonar would stop recording bottom echos at depths greater than 40ft and loose all bottom echos deeper than 10ft at speeds greater than 10kts. I immediately contacted Si-Tex and one of their service techs said that since the unit was greter than 5 years old, that it probably needed a "program update" -- whatever this is ;? . So anyway, since I fish 3-5x/week this time of year and 5-7x/wk in November, I'm in a big hurry to get this sonar fixed!! I don't argue with this Service Tech, just do what he says. I do ask, "Can this be fixed locally" and he says, "maybe, but most of the time, the local repair shops send them to us anyway since they can't fix the problem". Ok, fine!! So I send the unit back as he instructs and wait. Without including some of the middle details, which are also interested, but not relevent to my final question, I get a call today from Si-Tex saying, the unit is fixed -- the unit needed a new battery and some "program updates". So my question is -- "What are "program updates" on an older model CRT sonar?? Does anyone know? I hope that this isn't some kind of industy jargon meaning " we didn't do a whole lot of anything to the unit but we've gotta tell the customer something to justify an $80/hr shop rate for changing a battery......"

Default RE: Si-Tex 209 Repair - What Do You Think?

Likely guess is they had to either replace or flash some of the EEPROMS on the board; pretty common way to fix bugs.... Kinda like BIOS on a PC, the old stuff works but the new versions seems to help things run smoother.....
