Default any new Garmins gonna support XM WX

anybody know if Garmin is planning to release a unit that will support satelite weather other than 3000 series or the 376 handhelds? I would like something in between as i'm not interested in the networking deal ;?

Not sure you can really refer to the 376 (or 478) as a "handheld".

I bought the 376C just for the XM capability - already had a Lowrance LCX-19C. Sold the old LORAN...

Ocnsir,

Have you found the the 376 screen big enought to give you a good enough idea of the weather situation. I'm thinking about heading in this direction as well

Yes, it has been big enough for me to get a big picture of the weather, as well as looking at a smaller area. We have watched storm cells from 30-40nm away, and it has been dead on.

Used it in a portable mode on a friend's boat offshore, and he then purchased the 478 (same size).

I would certainly like to have it on a larger screen, but this met my needs.

If I was purchasing a new primary unit, at 7", or 10", or larger, I would not purchase anything that did not have this XM WX capability.

On a recent trip to the Bahamas, aboard a brand new King Air 350 with complete glass cockpit, the most amazing thing was the enthusiasm of the pilots with regard to the pilots version of the 376 with the XM weather. They were literally holding the unit in their laps with the puck antenna up on the dash. They panned down over the Bahamas while we were still airborne over Tallahassee, and started looking at individual thunderheads and which way they were moving. I truly think they were as impressed with that little unit as the rest of the new wiz bang electronics in that cockpit. I was too, for that matter. I did recently find out that you cannot interface the 376 with one of the other installed units, like the 3210. They want you to invest in the black box and associated antennas. Tremendous capability to have access to all that the satellite has to offer, especially for offshore fishing and deliveries, and of course while in the air on private aircraft.........

The 478 is perhaps the nicest portable unit I've ever seen. Remember, with the XM addition weather is superimposed over WAAS GPS coordinates accurate to a couple meters. Thats real time fellas. NOAA NEXTRAD real time. Whomp! Plus you can easily take the unit with you in the car for same features. The XM antenna is (+/-) $200 (don't forget that hit) plus you have the subscription to pay for monthly too. But the features are too cool. Inshore fishing in South Louisiana will never be the same. For us here, the winds play havoc with our water quality. The XM addition can superimpose windspeed and direction too (again in real time). So we're able to see tide action when we launch knowing whether its rising or falling and provided we've been at least once to where we're to fish, can plug in the spot and see wind speed and direction too. More of a picture before we get to where we're going is always good. Poor man's radar (buy a nice set of binoculars and don't run in fog). I have also read with an optional somethingorother and transducer, its a sounder too. As to size, I don't follow...how big do you need to represent yourself on a map of the entire United States coast? Your markers and waypoints aren't visable until you zoom in and as you do so, the size of the area is less broad but your waypoint is enlarged. Since this is the point of GPS, I don't see the size of the screen being an issue. Oh yea, its big enough (hand sized). And very, very bright too.
