Default Cellular Antennas

I was just looking through a Shakespeare catalog and the many cellular antennas they offer has me puzzled...

What are these designed for? If you buy one of their VHF antennas and you plug it in to your radio.

What do you do with these things; plug it in to your little clamshell phone?

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks.

You have to have the cellular amplifier to use their external cell ant. Costs around $300 - $350. I have one, but honestly haven't tried to use it yet. They claim it can extend your cell range up to 30 miles. I tried it at 50 miles offshore and had no signal. I need to do some tests with it and see exactly where I loose signal with my phone and then hook up the amplifier and see how much range it gives me. I got a sat phone not long after I installed the cell amplifier, so I haven't been real concerned with the cell phone range.

Actually the amplifier is not required. You can plug the antenna directly into the cell phone to get more range. The antenna typically provides more height and antenna gain than the cell phone itself. The amplifier provides an additional level of improvement (and supposedly range.)

Maybe you can attach the antenna directly, but I think you would have to have some sort of connector. The 8' cellular whip that I have has a screw in connector similar to a VHF antenna cable.

Good Luck!

I use the external cell antenna for my bag phone. Unfortunately, when it dies, the cell co will not activate another one since it is not trackable.
