Default Ipods

I dont have one yet, but I am thinking about getting one. My CD player broke on my XMD 3 clarion unit. So I was thinking instead of buying a new head unit with a working cd player, I would just get an ipod and then use that both in my truck and boat.

1) does the clarion XMD 3 unit work with an ipod? does it plug strait in? or would I have to get the radio broadcaster?

2) how/are you guys mounting the ipods to the dash? i think Glen has his mounted. Or are you just laying them somewhere on the dash area?

Thanks again for the input.

XMD3 - has RCA inputs for an ipod - use a ipod to home stereo cable sold everywhere

get a case from countourcase.com (I like the showcase model) attach it on and off the dash with 3M dual lock (like super velcro) - get dual lock at:

I do the same thing with my Clarion stereo, but I use an otterbox as a case.

you mean like the bose Sound Dock? It's ac/only I thnk and might have corrosion issues....one oif the waether resustant boom boxes mioght be better - otherwise a cheap alternative is a small marine amp+ pod + speakers....

I have an iPOD Nano that I use with an Altec Lansing IM-7 docking station/speaker system. Great sound, better in my opinion than the Bose. It works off AC as well as with D-cell batteries. Totally portable and will accept input from a portable CD player, cassette deck, etc. I plug in my old walkman for tape as well as AM/FM radio and have high quality sound wherever I want. Just my two cents worth.

thanks guys. i think i will be going that route.
If audio is your primary interest keep on eye out for dropping Ipod prices as Apple renews its Ipod line of products. Already the first gen Nano is obsolete and it just got here! Apple is going for video capabilities in the Ipod products so the older audio Ipods are being fazed out...and are cheaper. (The Ipod Nano is about $100 less as of a week and a half ago.)

Edit: there is a bunch of MP3 players on the market that are better than the Ipod and cost far less money. However, only the Ipod has the smorgasbord of aftermarket accessories like docking stations, etc.

Glen, this is a gift, so while used would be a good option if it were for me, I'd prefer to buy new for someone else.

I am currently out of the country (US) but the Apple store where I am knocked $100 off the price of the first gen Nanos. The new gen of Nanos is in 4 diff colors…funky colors…uck! But they will match the funky colors of Crocs...

Maybe check with your local Apple store or Google online Apple Ipod retailers.

I use my IPOD with a "Bose Sound Dock" and my 6amp inverter. The sound is AWESOME.
