Default Garmin 498 Software Update

Info for Garmin 498 users:

Do not buy the AC adapter with PC connector to perform software updates from Garmin for the newer 498 Chartplotter. Both the users manual and their website say that it can be performed this way but in actuality they no longer support updates for the 498 using this method.

You must get the Garmin memory card and USB programmer to perform updates.

I bought the AC adapter with PC cable, as it is easy for me to bring my chartplotter home with me, only to find out that it would not work. I emailed Garmin and was told they no longer support updates directly from a PC due to download time. I replied that I was dissapointed that their literature said that it would do so (in two places) and that I would now have to buy the card and programmer. Much to my surprise they said that one would be in mail the next day and sure enough they were true to their word.

I think it is great that Garmin sent you the free card programmer. I also bought the AC adapter and then had to buy the card programmer, but I would do it again. This is because it is the only way you can run the machine at the house to upload and download information, by buying the AC adapter, even if you can't use the serial connector for downloads.

It is dumb that Garmin sells an adapter that won't do it all, and I resent the fact that these manufacturers (Garmin among many others, like Microsoft) sell units before they have the software well de-bugged. They then expect you to download "fixes" and de-bugs with additional devices that you have to buy, just to use the devices properly.

Now THAT, is bad news.

Otherwise, the Garmin 498 is a fine machine, and I recommend it highly.

EJangler,

I absolutely agree with your reply. The Garmin is an excellent Chartplotter. Would buy another in an instant. I have the external mount antenna that I have mounted inside my center console and a P79 shoot-thru transducer. Excellent set-up for my needs in an Edgewater 188c !!
