Default Flush mount ideas?

I am replacing my Garmin GPS and my VHF with the new Standard GPS/VHF combo. That leaves the old Si-Tex CRT fishfinder, which I am planning on replacing in the future. Current photo below....

You can see where the current electronics are mounted in the photo of my center console. My problem is that they are designed to be seen while sitting in the helm chair, view is a problem while standing, which I'm doing most of the time. I was thinking of replacing that plexi cover over the box with a piece of star board. It would be fitted right into that recess on the inside of that black frame. Then I can flush mount my new unit and have plenty of space leftover on the right side for a future stereo and/or fishfinder unit. I was thinking of using a piano hinge across the top and simply screwing it in on the other 3 sides. That way, I can just remove the screws and tilt up when I need access.

The old Sitex can be mounted in the upper box for now, facing down. I plan on replacing that in the near future by either a newer ff unit or adding a black box to the standard. Either way, I would have enough future space on the flush mount piece of star board.

Only thing I'm disappointed about is losing the interior room of that box but anyone have any advice, suggestions or other options?

Thanks!!!

Possibly an access door installed on the side of the center console, in line with the area behind the electronics. Or, instead of installing screws on the 3 sides of the new piece of starboard, how about a couple of door latches similar to what you have on the plexiglas one now. That way, you could lift it up easier that removing all the screws. Also, looking at the angle of the console, it might work better to put the hinge on the bottom, and latches/locks on the top.

Thanks Capt., it would be nice to access that area....I'll look for a good spot. Hinge needs to be on top, there is no inset flange on the top, only on the sides so I was thinking the hinge could be the support for the top area. Using the latches is better than screws, thanks for the suggestions!

Anyone else? Will consider all ideas!

What are your plans for the electronics box overhead?

If you flush mount these things, are you gonna be able to see them well enough while standing with no glare?

My thoughts would be to move the VHF to the electronics box, remove the cup holder thingy, move the gps and ff to the top of the console. Plenty of adustability for the screens and a HUGE glove box!!

No plans for overhead, other than mounting the old VHF in there as a spare (remember this new unit is a combo vhf/Chartplotter) and putting that old Sitex in there. Can't read that old CRT screen of the Sitex in any kind of sun, so thought that would shield it if it were facing down. I think I'll be going with a new FF soon enough anyway, so won't hurt anything permanently to mount it up inside there.

First thing I thought of was glare, so I took my Garmin 182c out of it's mount and held it as if it were flushmounted and it was good, even in direct sunlight. I can only believe the new screen will be every bit as good, if not better, than the Garmin. With all these boxes and such, I really hate to mount it on top of the dash. Plus I'd have to drill the big honkin' hole for the wires. I guess if I flush mount and it doesn't work out for some reason, no real harm done except some holes in the frame of that lower box? I think I'll give it a whirl. If I like it, I'll paint the metal frame of that box opening to match the gelcoat of the center console. Can't really paint the piece of star-board, so it'll have to be stark white. I'll post a photo of the finished product.......hopefully get it done this week as it just arrived on the doorstep!

I see your point HBO.

The starboard with the piano hinge is the way I would go. Use some self adhering sealing window foam to make it water tight when closed, or you could make half of the new board permanent and the other half hinged with a small piece of board to create an overlap or tongue?

I thought that might be a Kencraft too! Nice boat and that dash looks really clean, Cooper. I have already cut-out the small piece of star-board I had and mounted my new unit. Not finished yet, but it won't turn out nearly as clean looking as that! I might just scrap the frame as you did and cover the whole area. Thanks for that, Cooper......it'll actually be less work in the long run.

I flushmounted a Si-Tex Colormax Wide chartplotter (7" diagonal) onto a hinged Starboard. This allows me to still have access to the electronics box and can be locked for quasi-security. The Si-Tex 106L (the LCD version of your 106) is mounted next to the chartplotter. It is fixed. I am going to add a second fishfinder on the top.
