Default Garmin Bluechart Americas

I got a great deal on the Garmin Bluechart Americas software, card programmer and 16mb chip at a local WM. I have the option to return if its not what I should have. My two questions are:

1. It is an old version 5 edition of the software. Have there been any meaningful updates with the new verion 8.5 that I would need. I would be looking to get two regions off the software; the Cape Cod(MUS003R) and Cape Hatteras (MUS007R).

2. The unit comes with a 16mb chip vs. the new 32mb chip that comes with the newer package. Is that enough to store the two regions, waypoints etc...A friend reccomended that I could easily delete one region and add the other as needed if I don't. I will only be headed down to NC maybe once a year.

I got the package for $100 which looks like about $50 off the best pricing I could find on the web for the new stuff.

Thanks in advance,

Call Garmin customer service and give them the date of purchase and #'s on the CD case and the Key code cand # and they will update you to a new 8.5 CD Rom disk at no charge. You will need to purchase a new diiferent key code to unlock your 2nd region on the disk. 16 MB is most likely note large enough for 2 unlock areas, check with Garmin when you call them, talk nicely and they may do a upgrade for free,if you don't ask you won't know.

Thanks Tuna. Talked to Garmin today. I just need to unlock one region tonight to get the code, go to the website and I can get the 8.5 version for free. No luck with a free bigger card but for a once a year trip at best I will just work with the 16mb and add and delete as neccessary.

16mB will almost be enough for 2 regions...i remember the cape cod region was something like 8.1mB. i'm sure the regions vary a little in size, so there is a chance you'll be able to fit both on there. if not, you can de-select some maps you know you won't use (e.g. certain harbors you'll never go near). you should easily be able to get all you need on 16mB.

did garmin say they'd upgrade the maps for free or just the software for the computer? the upgrade to the bluechart software has always been free, i didn't realize they'd upgrade your maps too. i guess it makes sense if you never used the key code. if it is the maps, you realize you have to send for an update CD, right?

what unit are you using this on?
