Default Need Garmin GPSMAP Sounder Recommendations

Too many models to choose from!
Any real life experiences? - recommendations for 23' CC overhead box?
Transom mount transducer - no holes in boat.

Thanks!

Well putting it in a overhead box is Literally a Pain in the NECK! Those box's are good for AM/FM radio's and VHF radio's + storage of junk.

Do you want real time weather? XM Weather is a extra expence each month. Do you want to have Radar interfaced latter?

There are some good deal's out there now on 2006C Garmin's.
You said no hole's in the boat and yet a transom mount will still make small hole's in a boat. The number one reason for transom rot, without good attention to detail.

Thruhull's scare some people as they have never had one. The Airmar B60 Tilted Element transducer is about the hotest one on the market now. Ask Jim@ ByOwner how many he has sold in the past 1 1/2yrs.

I've installed 2 of them in diffrent boat's now. I have no problem putting a 2 3/8in hole in the bottom of a boat. It's the people that haven't done it that have the hard time. I can install one in about 1 1/2hrs now.

Garmin 498c Sounder is a fine unit. I have the transom mount and it reads very well, at any speed. Maybe a big hole in the bottom of the boat is cool, but I don't care for the idea, much, myself.

Thanks warthog and EJ.
I've owned sailboats for the past 18 years so I'm familiar with thruhulls and my boat is foam filled, so I feel I just don't need it on this one. The overhead box is the only place to keep an instrument out of the weather, so size and good clarity/definition is a factor. I've seen the Gps Map Sounders and they look like the ticket - have it all in one instrument. Or, am I missing something?
