Default high end stereo

just purchased an everglades 29cc pilot
looking to put the best possible marine head unit and speakers in the boat..open to power amp and sub as well
has anyone put some higher end marine equipment in their boats with some success
Any of the larger boats seem to be using kenwoods or pioneer
i have also seen infinity speakers advertised on the web which are pretty decent home product claiming to have marine products
any thoughts....

High end marine:

Clarion/Poly Planar/Aquatic head units with the last offering a DVD version

JL Audio Amps

JL Audio Speakers

Everything else falls below in my opinion and I looked at them all. I am sure Glen E will be along shortly.

My set up: Aquatic DVD head unit, Aquatic 4 channel amp, Aquatic 7.5" coax set, Soon to add Aquatic 10" sub. Works fairly well. At the time JL did not have their Coaxials out but now they do.

SeaVee and now I belive yellowfin are using JL for all their high end offereings. I have most of what 606 mentions above - do a search for JL audio here and you'll see why many of us have gone that route

this is complicated...are you an ipod person? if you are, the clarion cmd4 is a good unit. Otherwise find a head unit that plays mp3 discs...add a JL mono block sub amp and get two subs, let the 6 ch amp power all the 7's - wanna save abit of money, get the JL coax's.... in florida? come' on over to my place any time and hear this exact system...

I did a search and this is all great info - I will be purchasing the Clarion CMD4 to install this winter & would also like to install an amp. My ? is how much bang for your buck to you get when you step up from 45 watts to 75 watts? I currently have an older Jensen marine stereo (the big one with tape deck & CD - Remember tapes?) and 4 Bose 6X9 speakers mounted @ the bow & also in the console. System sounds decent except for running. I think I want to try upgrading the head unit & adding an amp & potentially subs if this setup doesn't cut it. The boat is a '99 31 Contender.

Sorry, one more ? - Where do you mount subs?

Thanks,
Chris

chris - the expensive solution - JL 6 ch amp and mono block sub soofer amp - JL Audio

and yes there is a big diff in good amps and head unit power

less expensive - clarion 4 ch marine amp for the speakers and clarion 2 ch amp for the sub(s)
less yet - forget the subs and get the clarion 4 ch amp....

you can find good refurbished clarion amps off ebay from "Bass sales"...w/ warranty.....

If you don't need the radio , think of going straight into the amp with an ipod...no need for a head unit...

Gee Glen, what took you so long to respond...
I am an ipodder, so I want to get a new head unit to plug directly into vs. using the tape deck which is showing it's age.
Willing to spend the $'s for a good amp - Is it worth spending the extra for a 75 watt JL vs. the 45 watt? and can I go with a 4 channel for my existing speakers.
If I opt to go w/ Subs down the road, then I can get an amp just to power those.

Do still use the radio to listen to ball games - Found the CMD4 for about $250 on-line.

Thanks again,
Chris

the cmd4 is a great unit - esp if you have an ipod - plugs right in...your choice on the amps
the clarion 480m is 80 watts per ch x 4
the JL m4300 is 45 per ch x 4

You'd have to get duct tape or SWFL nav here for the nuances between the amps - I'm sure the JL is "cleaner"

depends on your budget - as I have been thru many amps, I'd recommend the 4 ch Clarion and change out later if you really become a purist.....

I'm most adamant about JL speakers, the clarion amps always were good to me...

If you want Sirius radio, Ipod controls or want to hear XM radio from the Garmin system get the Clarion CMD-4A. Other wise the Aquatic AV with its construction has proven itself to be the Dewalt of stereos. Glen's idea of using the IPOD has gone over very well. It all comes down to what you want to hear and how you want to hear it.

Ipod controls on the CMD-4A? I wasn't aware you got anything other than 'aux" and volume control when you plugged it in. Is there another box or something that gives me more control? And does that work through the wired Clarion remote?

joe - don't jump yet - yes there is a box that will hook up tot he clarion that let's you use the ipod from the radio but...The more you use an ipod, the more you will realize that you need the actual ipod to use a lot of it's functions. For example if you just want to set the ipod on play or choose between 5 playlists and just go forward and back, the interface box will let you do that. But if you are the type that wants to find a song now, or set up a playlist on the go, you need the ipod in front of you on the dash or tucked into the electronics box and use the std headphone jack and hook it up to the aux jacks of the clarion. It is hard to explain but I hate one line displays like on the radio for iPod use...it's too confining. I 'd rather stick the ipod on the dash. You can control volume there too....the box I'm sure is over 100 bucks, a ipod a/v cable is 15...and you can find the music you want right now....

Guys, noone has asked what chartplotter unit he is using. If he has a Ray E series, and goes with the Aquatic, he can watch DVD's. I believe others allow this feature now too.

GLEN, I like how you have the ipod on the dash. That is how we are setting up my buddies. He has decided to go with the Aquatic DVD head (he has an E-120). He will do the ipod like you did, and I know he is going with JL speakers, but he has not decided on JL amps or Clarion. Any suggestions?

Clarion and JL amps are both good - depends on your pocketbook - you can get refurb clarions with warranty off ebay - I have bought several for people there from "Bass Sales"...email me for add'l ipod install data....

Thanks Glen. That clears up what I was thinking--that the "conversion" would miss some of the 'features' of teh Ipod; and it sounds like it does.

he he he. im already buying 'accessories' for the 2007, even though its not even close to delivery yet. i bought jamie an ipod so she can load all her music and listen at home, and in the boat. now i dont have to fool with the clunky 10 disc changer that we have in the current boat. but, i did stay with sony. sony head unit, sony marine remote and a gadget that the ipod connects to, that will not only play the ipod, but it charges it too, and allows the sony head unit to control the ipod. looks like i can mount the ipod in the console, and out of the way.
no amps yet. i'll just wait until i see something that flips my fancy. the current one we have is....clarion, i think?
speakers will always be polyplaner. always had good luck with them--since the first boat we had, and i like to hide the box speakers under the gunnel caps. out of sight, out of mind. and out of the weather, too.

Drew, avoid the PP MA-9020 box speakers. They sound awful, the MA 9060 and MA 7500 are much better. They dont sound as good as the in wall speakers but will get the job done. The Clarion EA1251 does control the Ipod and CHARGE the Ipod at the same time so on long trips there is no need to bring a charger. It sure is nice to have the IPOD on the dash but putting it away works great too. This is only avialable on the CMD4-A and the M455A.
