Default GXM 53 not working.

Anyone ever have one of these things just die? Itís getting power to the control box but itís not seeing the antenna. I tried unplugging and plugging everything back in and several power cycles. Light on the control box is red and itís not showing up in the network on my plotter. Any ideas?

Iíve read many reports of this. Give garmin a call. Hopefully under warranty.

Happened to me. The power audio module went bad. The light was red and GXM 53 unit wasn't being shown on my network when I viewed devices in the chartplotter. Garmin sent me out a new power audio module unit under warranty, but they were back ordered so it took about a month to get it. Replaced the power audio module and it showed right up and has worked fine for the past two months.

The replacement for the GXM 53 is available the GXM 54 it doesn't add additional features it fixes the problems the GXM 53 experienced. Call Garmin.

Same thing happened to mine. Used it earlier this summer worked fine. Last trip a couple weeks ago i couldnít fine the antenna/source on my mfdís I did a search here to see if there were any troubleshooting tips to try this weekend, but it looks like I need to call Garmin. If for some reason anyone has a different suggestion let me know. Thanks!

A red light typically means the antenna isn't connected or is dead. Check the connection to the box and the antenna. If they're ok and the cable looks good, the antenna took a crap. People seem to note this happens a lot.

Even better is they won't send you a GXM54. They insist on sending you the same piece of shit GXM53 again. Garmin is far from a 'do the right thing' kind of company.

The GXM 52 is a more stable platform than the 53 or 54.

had same issue. My power module had red light instead of green. All connections were good just quit. Called Garmin and they sent me a new module free of charge no questions asked. Had nothing to do with the antenna itself. It was bad power module.

That's good news actually. The power modules list for under $100 online.

I would not say that the GXM-52 is all that great either. Mine quit a week ago. Suddenly- the unit stopped being recognized by the network and was very hot to the touch. Garmin charged me $180 for a replacement (refurbished) puck. Hope it fixes the issue.
I did an install for a friend and we went through 2 GXM-53's that were bad right out of the box.
I wonder why these are so unreliable- been using the same type of antenna for years in aviation with solid performance.

I've been using my GXM 52 since early 2014 hasn't missed a beat used about 500 hours a year. I've installed in 17 between 2014 - 17 all are still working fine.

The GXM 53 was terrible so it will be interesting to see how the GXM 54 does.

The problem with the 54 as I understand it, that only the newer MFDs are compatible. Even my 8212's are not compatible.
