Default Garmin 800 AIS compatible with ICOM M324 and Garmin 7612?

I have an non-AIS radio (ICOM M324) and a Garmin 7612 MFD communicating over a NMEA 2000 backbone. I was thinking of adding AIS, but wasn't sure if I purchased the Garmin AIS 800, if that will interface with the ICOM 324 and Garmin 7612 or if I will need a Garmin VHF radio as well. I would like to transmit as well as receive AIS, hence why I am looking at the AIS 800 from Garmin.

I am using two 7612s, Garmin AIS-600 and ICOM-504. I’m not sure how or why the AIS needs to talk to the VHF unless it’s about having the AIS targets on a VHF display but why use that when you have full size chartplotters?

I think that if you want to use the digital selective calling features from your chart plotter, you will need a compatible Garmin VHF.

exactly.

But what exactly are you trying to do ? It would help to know what it is you are trying to accomplish.

Thanks, I didn't realize that it was NMEA 2000. I assumed it was since it is getting the GPS from the 7612.

Yes, I would like this feature. So I guess that leads me to replacing the icom, which isn't so bad since it broke a week ago. It should be replaced under warranty, but I will take this opportunity to move to a Garmin VHF.

Would a good option would be the VHF 210 since I don't need GPS and I will likely add the AIS 800 down the road, so having an AIS receiver in the VHF would be redundant?
