I have the Matrix 37 and 787c2. Both have served me well so far.

My brother-in-law is considering one of these units. He ask me to help him find a good combo unit. We mainly fish for grouper and snapper on natural lime stone bottom. It is important to be able to tell what kind of bottom you are fishing over (sand, rock or shell ). I use a Sitex color on my boat and I have no plans to change. The Humminbird plant is only 12 miles from where I work so its easy to drop off if there is a problem. Thanks for the feed back.

If it's 50-100ft of water then that 987 is the ticket given your criteria.

The 987 has a standard dual frequency sonar that will read to China and mine hold bottom lock well into the 30s.

To:High & Dry How have you found the interpertation of the bottom types on the SI(side image) scans.
Easy to identify,or not? Thanks

The side scan is probably not best used for interpreting bottom type. Surely, lol, you can see the ship wreck in the scan I posted and the bait fish. It is sitting on a rock and gravel bottom. You can see rock but differentiating sand from mud etc is better done with the standard sonar mode. You can of course run the dual frequency split with the side scan on a split screen for side by side comparison.

People forget or don't know that the 987 has an excellent dual frequency down looking sonar and the screen is wide and clear and bright.

Hummingbird is impressive enough but I recently learned they design and manufacture in Eufaula, Alabama which I find as a big bonus. The customer service is there too...... jc

Of course there are things I would change and they would result in even more cost and complexity. As a consumer level equipment it is just about perfect. I would like the ability to record a video rather than take a picture, I would like an infiniitly adjustable side and bottom view. What do you want to change? Sure more depth capability would be nice. Mine works fine down to 100 feet and beyond.

The thing is that this unit should be considered an exceptional depth finder, chart plotter with excellent power, depth capbility and wide screen presentation that also has the ability to perform side scans.

It would be nice if they would throw in a Navionics chip set of your choice, the built in map is OK but does not have the detail you need for serious navigation use. Pretty typical I would say.

Word is they will have a new model with all maps built-in like Lowrance LCX-26HD. Not confirmed but that's what I've heard.

I just bought a Navionics Gold for my 787c2 but have yet to use it cruising. I'll be on the water this week and report back.

I have been waiting for a larger screen. It's presents a lot of info in it screen area, older eyes prefer a larger screen. I would also like to see,the left side data to be optional at times, so the whole screen could be one display. I really think it is a great unit, but presently have a large screen Garmin 2010 unit for charting with a older Humminbird unit with 2 tranducers, that are switchable- a down looking and side looking for depths. It's a very tempting buy,but holding back for for now. Thanks for all the info.

I picked up a 2007 Humminbird catalog at the Florida Sportsman boat show in Tampa this weekend. The new model is the 997c SI Combo. It has a 8" display and comes preloaded with Navionics Gold and HotMaps charts on select 900 series models. Some models are compatible with Navionics Platinum cartography featuring satellite image overlays, three-dimentional depth contours, port approach aerial photos, plus all the benefits of traditional charts.

The factory rep told me that the new 997 was worth waiting for. He said the hardest thing they are having to deal with is the Wal Mart, low end image. Since Johnson Outdoors bought them they are the real deal. The Navionics Platinum is compatible with the 997c SI Combo, 997c 3D Combo, 957c Combo, and 955c Chartplotter.
