Default Rod holder VHF Antenna

New boat doesnít have a fixed VHF radio or antenna installed. Iím looking to purchase an ICOM M93D and have a remote connection to a standard 8í VHF antenna positioned in the t-top rodholders. Main reason is that I actually think the handheld VHF is a better rescue tool but want to increase range underway in non-emergency scenarios. My question to the masses: any easy, stable way to position the antenna in rod holder? When the boat isnít in use I plan on pulling it down and storing it under the gunnel.

That is only a 5 watt radio and you won’ get much distance. How would you connect the antenna? VHF antenna is think coaxial cable. Why dont you mount a real vhf with a fixed antenna and get a hand held for your ditch bag?

Increasing antenna height for LOS is more than sufficient for a 5W TX. Thanks for the bump.

There are a lot of hardware mounting options for antennas. Take a look at one of the big marine websites and see what would work best bor you. I would think you would want a ratcheting mount. So you could lower the antenna for bridge clearance etc.

Havenít been able to find one that suits my application. Might have to modify a rod holder flag mount for antenna use. No need for elevation adjustment since we donít have bridge clearance issues.

Why not just mount a traditional fixed VHF so you can hook it up to your charter via n2k and have gps for the DSC when you hit that distress button. Then keep the handheld for the ditch bag? Seems like a lot of hassle to try and fabricate a mount when you can just throw a regular whip antenna on a ratcheting mount for the same thing
