Unhappy Port Eads Marina closes due to filling in of South Pass

Very bummed about this: https://www.louisianasportsman.com/f...mother-nature/
Port Eads is one of my favorite launching pads for Venice. In the article they site that the contract with high adventure had just run out. I can't imagine that the pass is really any worse off than it has been in the past couple of years.

In my opinion, their prices probably had something to do with lack of business to sustain it. I am sure some people can justify paying for convenience, but not most.

Their prices were outrageous and their service slipped substantially. We stayed there a few times during off peak pricing but on the last couple of visits they started nickel and diming every little thing.

Instead of more revenue per visit they needed to be figuring out how to increase visits.

Yup, and hour long waits for fuel and $9 sausage biscuits aren't the way to do it.

It’s gotten significantly worse within the past year or so.

South pass is much worse than it has been in the past. I have run this pass since 2000 ( 19 years ) End of last summer was the end of an era. Kicked up mud with an inboard boat for several miles. It is 2 to 3 feet deep in several places north of Port Eads near the two green cans in the middle of the channel where you are to hug the East bank.

I used to run sportfishers thru tiger with ease, hell pogie boats used it.

That was less than 10 years ago.

The irony is, well just read the history of the man it's named after and you'll see. Interesting guy.

Amazon Amazon

This book is one of my favorites. Read it to know why it was called Port Eades. What’s old is new I guess.

One day limit, cost of shipping supplies, capital investment in rebuild and a clogged river. Hard to overcome. Plus increased range of boats.

Current reports put the depth of south pass at a couple feet in many places and that’s with high water. During the summer it will have less depth and once the canes get breached by erosion it will be totally over.

Default Dredging

So it will be allowed to fill in completely. I have been out of South Pass 10-12 times on my own boat and 3-4 times with others. So if it silts in what will be left besides the main pass?

I guess since there’s very little commercial traffic it won’t be dredged?

Clearly there wasn’t a cost:benefit analysis done prior to accepting the 12mill from the feds. We have a min of 50 mill tied up in two Cameron parish schools with a total enrollment of 200 kids. Emotions after disasters trump reason and long term goals when the proverbial “FREE” money is being doled out. National optics makes it an easy call to not do the right thing with our money.

I read the Wikipidea article on him this morning. Definitely had a great influence on the area. Thanks for sharing

CG cut is gone. It silted in a couple years ago and now the beach is where the north bank used to be.

I ran south pass as recently as a month ago and never saw less than 5ft under the boat. I wouldn't take a big sportfish through there but it's plenty doable for most boats as long as you have a good recent track.
