Default Old Destin

Just ran across an old photo of us pulling into the dock on one of the many beautiful days we had back before Destin became well known...
NO condos...Just 2 motels and about 8 Charter boats, Loran A and a paper recorder!!!
Caught fish every day!!!
Learned a LOT!!!

Destin today is a circus from the minute you cross the bridge and the view is dominated by that gawdy hotel and tourist trap restaurants at the harbor. Used to be my favorite place in the 70's & 80's; not so much anymore.

Gotta go up to 30A to get away from the high rises... but then your view is going to be blocked by multi million dollar beach front homes.

Home sweet Home! you guys cant bitch and moan all you want but i'll take our "traffic jams" every day over some of the stuff y'all put up with. Destin is not what it used to be when I got here in the 80's and in many ways I wish it would go back.... but it aint gonna happen. i'm enjoying it for what it is today and I have to say it's pretty amazing. fishing is still good, weather is great, crime is low and I can launch the boat, be on the water and in the gulf in 45 minutes or less whenever the mood strikes. life is good!!

Been going there since the 70s and now I live on the bay - it's nice. When I'm out in the gulf, you don't notice the building. Sure there are more boats, but there's plenty of room. Oddly enough, not many people fish inshore. World changes, always will.

If you're into fishing from a restaurant or just hanging around town, it isn't great, but if you're in a boat and know what you're doing, you can catch a lot of fish year round. It's not like it used to be but it's still a lot nicer than many other places.

Here's some old Destin pictures from over 50 years ago.
I was 4-5 years old at the time. Mid 60's.

Did everyone's dad wear those hats back then? I grew up in Orlando but when we went to New Smyrna beach my dad always wore a hat like that.
