If you can avoid the slow-downs in Baton Rouge at the river and the intersection that has been under construction forever, and also avoid rush hour in either NOLA or Houston, you can make the drive in a little over 5 hours.

However, an accident or weather event could absolutely spoil this estimate.

There is a really good public radio (commercial free) station for much of that route once you get east of Beaumont, on 88.7 fm. They play a lot of new local music and jazz, not the same old songs you've heard 64 thousand times before.
