Default Tarpon fishing Venice LA

Looking for some info on tarpon fishing out of Venice. We will be there the first weekend of August. What kind of lures are used? My research points to **** pops. what tackle and what sizes can be expected that time of year? and it's mostly a sight fishing game around the inlet to the passes looking for birds? Any info would be great. Would also entertain hiring a guide Saturday the 7th of august.

I'm really hoping to catch one too out of Venice. I've hooked them briefly in the past in other places, and it was some of the funnest seconds I've had in my life.

My problem is finding someone willing to go with me in the heat of the summer to target them.

This was one of the best articles I found:

Are there tarpon around Venice? Yes. But if you are going to Venice there are much much better fisheries than tarpon. If you want to target tarpon then you are going to the wrong place IMO.

Some of the best Tarpon fishermen in the world would disagree with you.

There are lots of tarpon in the delta right now. Pass a Good Time caught the first fish of the year to my knowledge on July 1. We have only fished them once so far this year and saw tons of schools and lost a double. Right now, start searching anywhere from Sw pass to the Grand Bayou area. Put in your time. It's slow fishing til it goes off. if you have outboards get an electric motor.
If you need a guide, call Capt. ****. He's the best.

Not to mention we will be there fishing for 4 days. We might get tired of hauling in bull reds and red snapper at some point....

I would tend to agree. There are better places to fish for tarpon and better fish to catch in Venice.

We will be fishing out of a bay boat. I feel like we can catch our limit of red snapper, bull reds and some spec by lunch time. I figured we could look for tarpon til dinner time and head in. What other species should we target that we can safely get to in a 24ft bay boat?

Mangroves take live croaker out, Cobia in West Delta area are also a possibility. I know folks aren't big fans of Kingfish around Venice but they are literally everywhere in 40-100' water range out of south/tiger/NE pass. Saw a dozen or more leaping last week... plus commercial kingfish boats are right in there as well.

Gotta love Venice... perfect example of a first world fishing problem.

Mangrove Snapper for sure, no doubt live bait works great, but chumming with cut pogies and tossing in a piece on hook at the end of a 6' #50 fluorocarbon leader works good too. Bait runner style spinning reels spooled with braid, lock down the drag and pull those tasty little critters out from the rig legs.

I'm curious what you come up with on the tarpon too, I've started playing around in Lake Pontchartrain in the afternoons hoping for that once in a lifetime hookup there, fishing therapy at it's finest.

This website might help if you don't have it already:

Pound for pound the best tarpon fishing in the world. Honestly you will probably be wasting your time if you don't have a guide on your boat. If you do go without a guide, all the local tarpon guys are on channel 14 and most are nice enough to tell you where they are. Like me, just about everyone who fishes for tarpon in Venice learned from Lance Schouest so it would be money well spent to give him or Lance Jr. a call. 985-688-7633

umm TUNA! Venice is super unique! I'm not sure how far the tuna are out right now, but I know people catch them within sight of land! Bass boats will even get out there to catch tuna, that place is amazing!

We hired capt hoop for our first day there to show us the passes and some decent spots to fish. I asked him about taking my boat out for tuna and I am convienced its a terrible idea. Plus I think blue water us a solid 30 plus miles out. We have the range but all it takes is 1 problem and we are screwed or worse.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll talk to my fishing partners about the Schouest charter. Are they out of venice right now or grand isle?
