I know.. I've read a lot about NOT to use mono for Deep Drop..
but it's a party boat with about 20 people and my guess is no braided line.
I've been calling/emailing the office to find out more but
the only one who knows the answer is the captain and I'm still waiting to hear from him..

Easiest way to find out all the answers is to call them. BTY, if you are going over 300', I wouldn't go without braid. You are going to have a fine time holding on the bottom otherwise.

They don't allow braid

Used to help out on that boat a couple years back. They prefer no braid. If you do choose to use braid and tangle with someone else your line will be the one cut. The boat will definitely be fishing in the 400-600 ft range and the couple deep drop trips I helped on we did very well on barrel fish and a few different deep water grouper usually only around 15-18 people on the deep drop trips

If you have to use mono I'd use 40lb.....for the style of fishing and with that much line out you aren't going to break off much due to brute force. The advantage of the smaller diameter greatly outweighs the risk IMO. 15lbs of drag is plenty for deep dropping and 40lb mono with that much stretch will do that just fine with decent knots.

Deep drop and monofilament are mutually exclusive.

If the tide is running at ALL, Mono will be very unproductive due to the bow in the line and the stretch at 500 plus feet...IMO
