Default South Pass - Venice, LA ?

Have read where the SOUTH Pass is now impassable for larger watercraft. Wondering if anyone has been down that way or knows any local knowledge about whether a smaller bay boat can get thru? Will be in a 20’ Pathfinder which shouldn’t have a problem but also in a 24’ Ranger Bay

Thanks. Shot RBuck a message. Both of the boats in our crew draft less than 2’. Hoping to get outside the South Pass to hit a few fishing spots without having to run the SWest Pass and then over to the South Pass.

What days are you looking at? This weekend or in general? If sat/sun check the weather 4’ + and 15 kt wind. No way I would run SW Pass to S. Pass in a 20’ ft Bay Boat if this forecast holds. Still risky and uncomfortable at best running out Joseph’s Bayou across East Bay. Maybe I’m over cautious or misinterpreting the forecast. Good luck be safe.

Has the status of South Pass improved or is it still unnavigable?

From the last discussions I saw on here and other forums, Port Eads was abandoned and South Pass was silted in to the point that it was not navigable by anything drafting deeper than a skiff. Is this still the case?

It hasn't gotten any deeper since then if that's what you're asking.

Anyone with half a brain isn't going to come on a public forum and encourage you to try it whether you're in a 16ft bateau or a 42 Freeman

For my money any small boat Venice missions are now best accomplished via Red Pass/West Delta...but oh can those 7 mile and the shelf rigs ever cough up some fish

Alright I'm going a different direction here. Anyone with a boat, trawl, oyster dredge: RUN SOUTH PASS, TRIM ALL THE WAY DOWN, TABS UP, TRAWL OUT. leave your bread crumbs and post. Etch a groove in the muck! Unfortunately I dont think this will work and I find myself getting creative to get to Little Erkle.

If you run south pass do so with extreme caution. You should have a Sea Tow membership and a VHF to contact USCG to get in touch w Sea Tow. It’s fog season and 1 late adjustment could put you off your track and game over. Be safe and wear your life jackets.

Ran south pass with Mexican Gulf on Monday 2/17/20 in Colin Byrd's 42 Freeman without problems. Channel markers within the pass are placed more on the west side but otherwise ran the pass without issues.
