Default Great Lakes guys getting boat in early?

Such a mild winter with almost no ice even in the marinas I'm thinking I can get my boat in earlier than ever. My marina lets me put the boat in whenever I want and I'm thinking of going in maybe in 2 weeks. I have an inboard engine so unless we get a deep freeze for several days I don't think going in early will be a problem this season. Unless I hit an early season boat gremlin I would really like in the water. I have a couple of fishing buddies with trailer boats that have been fishing all winter, don't remember this ever happening.

With such a mild winter it wouldn't be unusual to have a really long cold spring so a little concerned about that. Our season in the north is so short it would be nice to get the boat in as soon as I can. Many marinas won't let you put the boats in until May 1st. Anyone else planning on getting their boats in earlier than usual? How many of you have marinas that won't let you go in prior to May 1st?

Winter sure is mild Russ. I hope you can launch soon as I know you're itching to fish.

I trailer now that I don't have the pontoon. Works out pretty good at the ramps since I can fish during the week now (loving retirement!). Next trip up to the camper I'll try and get my season pass at East Harbor Marina for their ramp. Worked out pretty good last season. I'm itching to use my new electric trolling motor this year. I'm pretty much ready to fish now.

Let's hope Spring gets back to normal after last years debacle.

Boats start getting dunked in 1- 2 weeks on Ontario. This happens just about every year . Ontario does not freeze over ,sometimes the shoreline gets ice . Browns start hitting along the shoreline any day now.

Still have 2 1/2 ft of ice at my dock on Georgian Bay (Lake Huron) but it’s weak and melting. Put the snowmobiles away today and ice huts have all come off. I’m guessing 2 weeks till ice out and and the boat will go in the week after
we’re about 3 to 4 weeks ahead but I won’t be surprised if we get one more blast of winter

We are ice free in Port Clinton and small aluminum boats and some of the Maumee River charter boats have been fishing for a while now; and the walleye bite is awesome.

A buddy of mine put his in yesterday for the season, and he is the 4th or 5th boat in his marina. Their docks are (mostly) in, but no shore power or water. As a side note, we trolled for walleye yesterday afternoon, and got a 3 man limit in three hours. Largest fish was 26”, and lots of solid eaters.

I’ve always put my boat in the second week of April in Lake Michigan. A few years back we had a mild winter and I put the boat in the slip at the end of March. We had a cold snap and, while everything turned out all right, I’m not taking a chance of doing engine damage as getting someone to do major engine repairs that time of year would be pretty much impossible.

With everything going on, I'll probably stay quarantined in Florida till end of April. Probably put boat in first week in May. No hurry. Got a dock this year, so excited about that.

New to Lake Michigan fishing.... how long do the brown troll the shallows/shorelines after ice-off? Days? Weeks?

Usually until the end of April ,sometimes early May. On the South /NY side of Ontario. Not sure about Michigan. probably close to the same.

Yup, Trudeau said he wants all Canadians home by March 23. Dunno that means they mean they HAVE too, but unsure if US border will allow Canadians in to US at this point. There's going to be a mass exodus of Canadians here in my campground soon!

I talk to the Marina today and they are already putting Boat in. They didn’t know how many but shed there’s probably at least a dozen or more boats already in. I’m still a little paranoid that there’s going to be some winter left this season but not likely to have a cold spell long enough to do damage to any boats that are in the water.

We did a sea trial yesterday in a 24' Cape Horn center console; boat performs well; but I'm still shivering!

Give me a express /hardtop/cabin style boat with a Eisenglass hanging of the back any day of the year in the North East for that exact reason. [ Along with a few more. ]
