Going to be tough to determine what happened unless someone witnessed the fire start.

I've investigated a lot of boat fires. I'd say the odds are at least 50/50 that a team of professionals could determine what caused this fire. There's more information (clues) left on that boat than you would ever think. The video of the fire will help.

Without Foam you don't stand a chance to put out fires on fiberglass boats. Hi-Expansion Foam in particular. Even along the shore most local departments do not carry enough to do the job, so it would be a great idea for the marinas themselves to have one of those portable foam carts like chemtrec I think it is makes so the Fire Dept could rapidly put it to use with a 1 3/4 hose line attached.

why did they raise and salvage it? required to because its a lake? i'd think most insurance companies wouldnt want any more expense on an old boat like that...

I wondered the same thing, why did they salvage it?
All gas inboards should have a fume detector.

there have been threads over the years where fume detectors have not worked when tested

i personally inspect bilge area before every trip

some times during a trip

after each fuel up especially

Same here, your nose is set to a higher level of sensitivity.
You should inspect the engines and bilge before each trip and inspect all fuel hoses every season.
But a gas vapor detector can alert you to a problem that occurs underway.
I can't tell you how many times at the gas dock I have seen people with gas inboards just gas up, not lift the engine hatch, no checking, just hit the blower and go.
