Default Bimini crossing March 21st 2019

Had a previous post on the main page but was told to post in this section to get a little better feedback..(I’m new to this forum so bare with me)..I have a condo booked in Bimini for March 21st -24th 2019 (next week) I know it’s probably not the best time to cross because of the March winds but we’re hoping for the best, we’ll be leaving from Fort Lauderdale and headed to South Bimini in a 29’ fountain fever. Just curious if anyone else from this forum would be crossing around the same time. I know weather is obviously a huge factor so we’ll be keeping a close eye on that..mainly just trying to see if I was completely stupid trying to cross next week..any feedback is appreciated, thanks!

It all depends on the weather. We've had many very easy crossings this winter. There have been a lot more weather windows this winter than last. But today my son had to cancel a charter because it's blowing 30 off of Fowey. I fished last week and it was dead calm off Fowey until 2 and then at 3 pm it was blowing 25. Be flexible. Watch the weather carefully. The run from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini in a Fountain is 1 1/2 hours. It's no big deal at all if the seas are good. If it's blowing from the North or NE at more than 15 knots, you're not going to be having a good time. If the seas are bad, don't take the boat. Take the ferry. You'll still find plenty of things to do. The important thing to do is be safe. If you have a good window to get over there, be sure the forecast looks good to get back. If you're over in Bimini and it's going to be a bad crossing back, leave the boat and come back for it when there's a good window. The slips are very cheap, especially this time of the year. Usually, coming back is easier than going over because the prevailing wind this time of the year is from the NE so you get more of a following sea. AGAIN, BE SAFE, CHECK THE FORECAST. DON'T GO IF YOU'RE NOT COMFORTABLE. GO IF YOU HAVE GOOD CONDITIONS. BE FLEXIBLE. ENJOY.

Awesome..thanks for the reply jillybird! Hopefully everything will be a go and end up being nice enough to cross. We’re mainly just trying to snorkel and do a little spear fishing. I do a lot of fishing in the gulf so it will definitely be something new

Hey Nathanfry96 hows the weather looking for the ride over on Thursday. I was checking the seas and it looks like 3-4 footers east of Lauderdale just about until you arrive in Bimini. Winds should be in the 10 knot range. Looks like we are still going to cross on Friday morning and check in to Bimini then head to Nassau for the night. Safe travels on the ride over

Tricky forecast for you, Nathanfry. If you believe the always wrong NWS, Thursday has the lighter winds -- N at 5-10 but still significant seas left over from the current blow. Friday the winds are supposed to pick up to N 10-15. The weened east NE winds look much better for the return. Seems like a definite wait and see forecast which is usually the case anyway. Good luck

Narhanfry, you're looking better and better for tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed and your eyes on the forecast.
