I've wondered if this is worth it for anything other than a hardcore fishing day. Leave at sunrise, check-in early, run around all day in the water and head back a few hours before sunset?

You can always go to Blue Marlin Cove to stay at night.

It was a good time for us to go from a CC to Walk Around with a generator. Anchoring off the beach at OBB is still one of the best spots for a day or two.

Going to BMC this Monday. I'm assuming customs is still open at West End? Also, is the small restaurant/outdoor bar still open for a drink and conch fritters or is that closed, too?

Customs and the Fuel dock are open.
The Bar at the beach is sometimes open--sometimes not. The Restaurant at the docks is closed!

Teasers has been shut down and Jareth is looking for another location to prepare food. You can call Kyle (dockmaster) and there is only room enough for @ 6 boats on the west wall. As predicted, MacDonald has started to lay people off as there is no revenue coming in to support them via dockage or room bookings. I am hopeful that this shutdown will only be for a short while but then again, it is the Bahamas. It was not long ago (2012) that OBB went thru a very similar change with Adler but he allowed the lease so that the marina stayed open. I have heard that Adler is looking for some other management company to take over the marina and his property but no clue on who, when or why.

They have now opened a new restaurant on the South beach side. The building was built years ago for Ginn, but never used. It is now open as a Bar & Grill.
It's a bit of a walk but they are running a little shuttle bus over for anyone wanting to go.

Apparently they are even closing the swimming pool. Left it open over last weekend for a wedding, but supposed to be closing now!

Closing the pool? That’s nuts. The Bahamian government should create a ‘Closed pool inspection’ program, once weekly at a $1K a pop. It’s a shame the government is letting this happen to what was once a nice place.
slipkid, land crab and Kaimana like this.

Old Bahama Bay Marina Status

We just spoke with the Dockmaster at Old Bahama Bay, West End, Grand Bahama.
Here is their current status:
The marina is 95% closed. That means there are 6-7 slips available in the marina. They are also making available room for 4-5 boats in the canal along a concrete dock tied to cleats.
They take NO reservations.
Call no sooner than 2-3 days ahead for availability.

Dockmaster: 242-602-5172.

yep, accurate, I called today to make a reservation completely oblivious to all this. What a shame, loved it there.

If they shut the fuel dock down for any reason. Where is the next closest dock with fuel?

The dockmaster is Kyle at OBB, or what is left of it. They only have the west wall for @ 5-6 vessels and that is it. Weekends the wall is full for the next few months so they are trying to figure out creative methods to dock more boats.
They will not close the fuel dock nor the customs facility as that is a port of entry. One note is that Adler does not want to look bad in the news so he is reopening the whole marina to host the Mike Schmidt Winner's Circle Fishing Tournament which is a wonderful charity fishing tournament which is in April. Will be interesting how this pans out.

Are those owned by Adler? I thought I saw one of the OBB owners posted that a separate entity had purchased that small portion of land with the customs and fuel dock.

The fuel dock and the land to the west of the fuel dock and behind the south dock, not including the buildings is not owned by Adler. I believe that it is still owned by original OBB development but again, I cannot say for sure other than MacDonald presented a plan to build there and the Bahamian government does not want two projects going on competing with one another. It is strictly a tactic to force the condo owners to sell out at a cheap price and then use them for cash flow while the other Ginn Development gets started, if it ever does. As of now, I believe the buyers backed out of the deal but that has not been confirmed.

Default Raft-Up?

I wonder if they will permit rafting up on the wall or in the canal. Wouldn’t mind that for an overnight. We’re heading west from Hope Town and not sure if we’ll bother with OBB. 77.7NM from Mangrove Cay to Lake Worth.

Default Turning Basin

Yes, boats have anchored there. Wouldn’t take more than a couple/three boats to “clog” the entrance.

if I were really up against bad weather, I would go up one of the adjacent canals and anchor, or tie up at an empty dock behind one of the houses. Not kosher, I know, but wtf.
