This^^^^^^^

I have been plenty over the years.

My last time was as a hired Captain on a big sportfish.

Things I learned,

Don't let 20 women from other boats board the vessel while doing jello shots and then get on the fly bridge and start showing their tits. "Sure I did"

That prompted a boarding and a request for the Captain of the vessel to produce life preservers for all on board. "Had 12 pfd's"

Be prepared to do a field sobriety test cause I smelled like alcohol from all the jello shots that had been spilled all over everything including me. "passed that, wasn't drinking"

Then the boarding party ordered me to get the number of POB to match the number of PFD's
Boats owner wants to argue with them.

Get through that by miracle with no citations. Things settle down a little for the moment.

AS someone mentioned, have some way to use the bathroom.
Two boats over some guy tries to discreetly take a leak off the swim platform, all hell breaks loose as this woman says her child saw the guys junk and now the cops have him and someone was shooting video. Not sure the outcome but the guy could be facing a hell of a life changing charge for that one.

Time to leave and now I have boats going ape shit cutting in and out. Even at idle speed trying to stop a 80,000 lb boat or change course in seconds in tight quarters every 30 seconds gets old and hard on the nerves and transmissions.

Got out in one piece and back to Maximo. Owners wife was not on board but was damn sure waiting at the dock some what annoyed by the fact that we returned with more women than we left with. Got the dock lines on and went into the salon to get my stuff and found that someone had puked in the galley sink.
Told the owner I was going to go put my stuff in the truck, that was the last he saw of me.

Soooo, Have fun, watch your six and takes some pics.

Remember Capt. Nate may be there looking for the guy that smashed his cowling on his brand new SHO on his last Gasparilla.

Holy crap what a story!

Good advice, any other advice for a newbie this will be my first year.

I'm already looking for someone to captain our boat... seriously.

I'm not available!

Lot's of fenders.

Be prepared for the type of boaters that use their boat once a year.

Seriously consider the taking a leak issue! They really cracked down on that a few years ago. It ain't like you can just pull over to the side to get away from people.

Take a capable boat. The wakes once you get in the open can get sloppy real quick especially if the wind is howling.

Years ago it was pretty rowdy. They have cracked down with heavy police presence. Not near as wild as it was 20 years ago.

Heck, we brought our own cannon one year.

If you're planning on doing the invasion then you need to make sure you have a light touch on the throttle. You will be doing a lot of bumping in and out of gear once we hit the channel. You need a light touch so you don't throw your people around.
As 20Bimini says, you really need a head. You can not just let guys hang it off the back. You will also be moving so thinking you'll be able to stay right next to a buddy boat with a head and have drunk people go back and forth won't be happening. I rigged up a head for the Shearwater using 4 pieces of PVC and tarps. Two poles go into the rocket launcher behind my helm/livewell seat and the other two poles go into the furthest back rod holders on each side. I screwed a tarp to the poles so it pulls taught once everything in place. I left one piece with a flap for people to go in and out of. This covers the rear livewell that is at "squatting" level for the ladies. They are able to hold onto the rocket launcher bar on the back of the helm seat and do their thing. Guys are able to stand and do their thing without exposing themselves. I just leave the livewell pump on for the "flush". It usually has to get set up twice during the invasion. Once it's deployed, I make everyone use it and then when they're done it's able to be collapsed and tucked back into one of the front rod lockers. I try to tuck right up next next to a police or fwc boat and keep them directly off my port side. This way I really only have to worry about the knucklheads off my starboard side. They have seen my makeshift head being deployed and used and give me a round of applause.

I don't get my first beer until I get under the Channelside Dr and Selmon Expressway bridges headed north back up the Hillsborough River to my buddy's house.

Due some diligence in regards to hiring someone. Last year they tried to provide a service were several "captains" could be hired. Well some of those guys weren't exactly captains and even got themselves a BUI.

I am planning on arriving early about 9:00 AM to get a good spot set up and make room for friends boats around me so I know everyone close and don't need to deal with non boaters boating.

The TPD marine work out of my hanger and talking with them they will start getting the lines set at 10:00 AM pushing people back.

We'll be there. Headed over from St Pete that morning. Not sure how much we'll hang around after the invasion. Rafting up for a bit would be fun but I'm not sure I want to get stuck there all day.

You may want to consider getting there before 9 am if you want a good piece of real estate with room for others around.

Yes some of our group want to turn it into a St Pete Drinking day and others feel "if the sun is out I'll be out"...

Augh!
