Default The Googans invade the Keys

I came down to the house to finish up last minute new boat prep for our Bahamas trip in August and forgot that mini-season was later this week. Oh my God, the googans, poachers, clueless and obnoxious seem worse this year than ever. I thought snow birds could be obnoxious but these invaders take the prize. Cutting people off on the road, pushing people out of the way in restaurants, towing derelict boats with barely operating trailers, crossing channels looking backwards...you name it. God help the poor folks on the water Wednesday and Thursday. Unfortunately we always have a death or two this week. A little common courtesy and simply paying attention goes a long way. FWC is going to have their hands full. I hope they nail the folks making multiple trips over their limit and those who think the rules donít apply to them. Please be careful all!

Can't wait. Driving down today. The lines at the publix in marathon are going to be crazy. Hopefully everyone went yesterday.

Hey Billable, where do you live in Orlando? I also live in Orlando.

We purposely are coming down after.. hoping the charade ends by Friday..

Does it normally clear up pretty fast? After the 2 days?

We're actually down mid day on Thursday. Is there any safe haven out there.. just for fishing.. deep reefs?

Islamorada native here. I used to go out for mini season. Last trip was a few years ago. Snorkeling right after sunrise, very close to the boat and another boat came by on plane maybe 40í away. I decided a lobster isnít worth it. And yes we had a dive flag up. The trick with dealing with traffic is run errands early and then take the boat to avoid the highway. Stay safe everyone.

If you live in Orlando, you should feel right at home.

I will have my buddy pick me up 500 bucks worth from the fish house when he comes home after the regular season opens.

The mini season is a joke! Whats the over and under on how many deaths this year. The sad part is so many take multiple limits to justify the hassle and expense.
Last time I did mini was in the seventies. It was nuts then.

The regular season makes more sense. More days to catch them and there are still plenty to be had.

Having been down during mini the last 25 years we always did offshore fishing for those 2 days. No Googans on the weed lines for 2 days. Had the house stocked up and didn't go to the store or get on the road at all until the following Sunday.

I honestly have no desire to even deal woth the madness. Getting in midday on Thursday.. want to get on the water.. are the deep reefs a parking lot too? Or does it get better the further out.

Does the water tone down by Friday / the weekend?

Driving down Tuesday can’t wait to see the numb nuts staying on each side of my place. Usually they all bring 3 hookah, tanks, snatch sticks, more tanks more flags more bully nets, lights, gens and they catch a whopping 2 tails !

Been doing mini season in KCB for 9 years. The locals like to bash the tourists but they seem to forget how much revenue it brings in, especially post Irma. We dive gulf side off 7 mile and havenít had a single issue in 9 years safety wise. Bullynetting is a different story.

The revenue is good for the keys. The idiots are not! There are lots of folks that shouldnít be on the water operating boots. For that matter a lot of people he should be operating cars. Thank you

My other house in Orlando is across from the science center near downtown. I donít deal with the Orlando Googans if I donít have to.

We make a dude's trip out of it every year. Keeps the band together. We've been pushing further and further offshore to get away from the clowns. We mostly dive 20-35' spots free lung. The googans that come down can't dive more than 15', so we easily separate ourselves. Atlantic you can see them being idiots. Gulf, they don't go out more than a couple miles. So far, it's been working.

We do all our shopping beforehand and bringing it down in the coolers. Drive in the middle of the night. Pretty much never leave the house if we aren't on a boat.

I can't tell you how many times we've called in boats to FWC or Monroe county. I feel bad for those dudes. These clowns aren't just un-safe, they think mini season means open season, no rules. If 2 die this year, it wouldn't shock me.

I quit going on mini five years ago but am headed down this week. I must be crazy but a trip on someone elseís boat and house makes it easy. This could be a what was I thinking moment since I last saw the craziness.

Stay outta the shallows man. Anything under 10' is literally Mad Max territory.

Never been. Every year we try to plan a trip but the others can never commit and Allie and I don't want to go alone our first time. Oh well maybe regular season next year!

Looks like we're gonna be part of the flotilla...coming in Thursday and leaving Monday...meeting up with friends with a condo there.

Only going to Marathon and not towing a boat down this time...hopefully it wont be too bad.

The last time I was there for the opening was back in the mid 80's.
