Default Were we Trumped?

I do not want to start a political thread.

Today, my wife and I were traveling the ICW from Fort Lauderdale to North Palm Beach. All went well until we called the South Boulevard Bridge for their next opening. We were told that the bridge was closed and would not reopen until 2100.

We had to turn around and seek shelter back down south. We ended up in Lantana for the night.

I thought it was a mechanical failure. However, speaking to a couple of locals, I was told that it was because President Trump was coming down to Mir-a-lago.

I know all about the security zones and the security rules but I was not aware of any bridge closings. Needless to say, it was a real snafu for us.

Have you heard of this closing?

I haven't heard... but I'd bet it was mechanical. I don't think they close it that long.

But you are starting a political thread, and you are spreading a rumor that you heard from "speaking to a couple of locals," and no one in an official capacity.

Again, not a political statement or "troll" or anything. Maybe you aren't familiar with what has happened down here. Latana section of the airport closes down. A man who owns a flight school and rents airplanes has had to shut down when the President is visiting. The city of Palm Beach has incurred additional costs for manpower and resources.

I'm not saying it's Trump. I don't really care if it's Trump or Obama or George Bush. One of the bridges had a problem raising one of its spans. I thought this was another mechanical problem, too. It makes sense they would close that bridge if the President was traveling through.

Just looking for a little local knowledge. If you don't have any, don't bother to respond.

I would think if the president were visiting and the bridges were going to be closed for hours, it would be in the up position (once the president is on the island)....easier to control vehicle traffic and access onto or off the island that way. I believe you were just an unfortunate victim of a bridge malfunction.

When Trump is in town, the coast guard patrols the area by his place with multiple small boats. I've never had to go around. I do believe we are required to stay in the channel.

Must have been mechanical. At most the bridge would be closed for an hour or so to prepare and allow for the motorcade.

Probably mechanical. We went through there a couple weeks ago when the POTUS was in town and the CG had established a security zone both in the intercoastal and offshore near Maralago. All you had to do to transit the area was to hold a steady course and speed. There were no bridge restrictions.

There is a huge construction project happening on that bridge. There is a list of times when it will be closed.

http://www.southernblvdbridge.com/Construction.php

The navigable Intracoastal Waterway (ICCW) through the Southern Boulevard Bridge will have half-channel closures from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday until February 2, 2017. A double-span opening (full channel open) may be requested during those times if four-hour notice is provided by calling Clay Bores, Project Superintendent, at (407) 488-0738. During half-channel closures, the horizontal clearance through the bridge is 35 feet.

The rest of the story: called this morning to find out if the bridge was operational. Bridge tender said yes. Asked what the problem was yesterday. She told me is was mechanical, something to do with not getting the gates down.

We were on the south side of the bridge with a sailboat waiting for the 8:45 am opening. Current going with us. Two sailboats on the north side of the bridge. Tug and barge coming southbound. Bridge tender said she might open a few minutes early for the tug and barge. Reminded us that northbound with the current, should go through the the bridge first (never had a bridge tender comment on traffic before). Tug and barge approaches bridge and two sailboats agree to fall in behind him. There is room and time for us down bounders to clear the bridge before he gets there. Bridge opens and we go through. There's a CG small boat on the other side. Tug and barge proceed through the bridge - very heavily laden with rock. Two sailboats are approaching the bridge about 40-50 yards away from the opening. Bridge tender says, "The Coast Guard has ordered me to close the bridge. You will have to wait for the next available opening."

Yup, entourage crosses the bridge a few minutes later.

Never been happier to clear a bridge!!!

You should edit your first post before local news idiots start referencing this open forum.

Can see it now. Trump causes bridgegate 2, orders bridges closed. ~according to The Hull Truth.

Trump doesn't close bridges, roads, airports or anything else. The Secret Service does and would do so for any other President.

Ebert, Suntex Marina, used to be Loggerhead.

Seems like some people just like being scrappy. I've been caught in a traffic jam caused by President Obama - oh, excuse me, I mean caused by the Secret Service. There are a lot of "locals" around here who are a little tired/frustrated with the attention, congestion, and expense caused by Presudent Trump - excuse me, I mean by the Secret Service.

It was the same when President Bush (senior) was in Kennebunkport. More traffic, more people, more than the "locals" really cared for, although most were fond of the Bush family.
