Plotting a coarse based on wind direction and wave hights will be a last minute calculation. Iíll be heading over in a 17í Boston Whaler btw. Trust me. Iím overly cautious and predicting departure to the minute. This trip started off with three nights. Green light from the big boss (wife) to add two more but it might be three. Monday may be a wash with east winds at 14kts during AM hours. Might depart Sunday.
I would lose 2 of the GPS and trade them in for more fuel.

31 gallons.. Also have a fuel management system hooked up to my simrad. At 3400 rpm and fully loaded Iíve got a 240 mile fuel range.

On a side note, Iím well prepared to cancel all plans and stay with my best friend in Ft Lauderdale. This new model is ugly. Sunday will definitely be a no go if itís true.

It probably wouldn't hurt to jump on line and check out the weather on some of the local news sites. Crossing in a 17' boat can be done, but don't just look at wave height. Remember that higher winds out of the east will also stack up water on the east coast of Florida. That can make a rough departure or return. How much stuff do you plan to take over with you? I know you are an experienced boater, but be careful not to overload your boat.

I just spoke with harbor town marina for parking for our Bahamas trip. They said itís first come first serve.

We are leaving Monday July 2nd.

Do they have plenty of parking or should we be concerned about it being able to get a spot with the holiday.

What's your fuel burn plowing along at 1800-2400 RPM?

They have a good bit of parking but holiday weekends will fill up. I say get there as early as possible. How big is your trailer?

I was able to make 30 mph the whole way but my wife and I got pounded for about 60 miles until we exited the stream. There is no way I'd be crossing in a 17 whaler, the weather is just too unpredictable. You may get a perfectly flat day to head over but it could take a week or more to find the right window to come back

FWIW; Windfinder had 5-10 seas > 2' last Friday from Bimini to Miami. The last 10 miles towards Fowey wind was 27 kts! It can change in a hurry.

I am fully aware... We ran down to cat cay to fish some of my bottom numbers on Monday morning, perfectly flat on they way down get on the hook and start flowing some chum when two storms move in, one south of us and one north boxing us in.. We picked up and started moving toward bimini when the temp falls off about 15 degrees and wind started howling 25 knots. I think my wife is scarred for life after running through one of the worst lightning storms I've seen in a long time.

there were about 10 boats waiting at the mouth of the harbor when I came screaming by, all of which made an immediate u turn back to big game after seeing the looks on our faces. It was some scary shit for sure, I've been in some nasty weather but this cell was really bad.

you may want to have a plan b just in case, I thought we'd be fine this past weekend no holiday or anything but when I called on Saturday to confirm space they were full. We had to launch from my neighborhood ramp up north adding about 25 miles to the crossing. Word is definitely out about HT and they will fill up

Hi there. Welcome to the thread.

No disrespect meant at all, but please just read the thread. You'll find alllll the information you're looking for in there.

Having said that, no, you don't check out. As far as checking in, look up the ROAM app, or the thread on here about it.

Cheers,

Jeff

Next time you're in a bind let me know I might be able to stash your trailer behind my house for 2 days or so. I'm a few blocks from HT.

Iím not sure. I typically donít run that slow unless weather picks up. And in that case going against the waves can almost double fuel consumption. The weather models are still predicting strong winds and rough seas Sunday and Monday. Grrr. Good thing I have a cool boss. Vacation time is flexible. Iím starting to look at Saturday now. Very challenging to plan a trip around wind speed and direction.

What's the general consensus of the braintrust here? The forecast models keep changing every 12 hours and now that they may have settled in for ok crossings Saturday and Tuesday, the weather forecast over there doesn't look all that great for Sunday and Monday.

was hoping to enjoy some sunshine, a little fishing, and hanging out at honeymoon harbor or other nice spots with the kids and gf.

for those planning on going this weekend have you changed plans? For others, based on the forecast for crossing and over there would you go or hold off for another weekend?

thanks

In my opinion, the forecast starts becoming somewhat reliable at about 24-36 hours before the trip. It's been raining non-stop in south florida for a month

Still planning to go tomorrow to Monday. Agree with alacrity, forecasts change regularly and only get firmed up within 24-48 hours. As a prime example, the initial run of the usually reliable Euro model this morning was the one that generated a tropical depression/storm off the coast of Stuart out of nothing. Then the most recent run completely dropped it. What does look clear is that tomorrow, Friday, and even Saturday look pretty good.
