pelican flats is a good place to start. Not hit as hard as 8A.
This also allows you to find new bottom fishing spots. The ledges are easy to find. But you need to look for and mark the suspended fish.
Thanks! The last couple trips where I was skunked I was just heading out to 90' depth, putting in the ballys and lures and trolling east out to 400' depth or so hoping to hook up on the way out and then concentrate on those areas. Just never had any bites. Would get all the way out to depth, troll north or south for a bit, then turn come back into say 180' and zig zag either north or south 180' to 250' and unfortunately just never had any bites.

Sometimes it's just tough. I am hopeful some bigger Dolphin are moving in, but it's been 5 weeks since my last trip so have no idea what to expect. Keep moving, changing baits, speeds, depths, until you find something or run out of time trying. Not really interested in targeting Kings now.

Ian,
Contender is back in business! Spent a lot of time working on all kinds of things since last year.
Hopefully got all the bugs worked out. Running out of Ponce on Saturday. I'll post results.

Jonathan,
Trolling for pelagics is a surface game. depth may/maynot play a part in the puzzle. You have to read the surface.
look for irregularities. Temperature brakes of are magents! color change/weeds/slicks/rips are where the fish will be.

Thanks, LagoonAkin. I guess I was not necessarily doing anything wrong, just the way it goes sometimes. I will keep trying. When (what month or months) do we have the best shot at Wahoo here?

hey guys Friday 10/12 report out of Sebastian. 4 for 6 on dolphin and 1 blackfin. all under 10 pounds so nothing big, but a great day given the weather we've had the past 4+ weeks. Water inside ~ 130 was ugly. Hard to tell exactly where it cleaned up as today was super overcast (no sun) until late in the day. We spent most of the day between 380-450 where we found sails and porpoise feeding so we stayed in that area . Otherwise, a dessert as far as any sargasm or flyers. Trolled out to 500 and saw no sargasm at all except for small scattered pieces here and there I guess all that S and W wind we had last day and a half pushed it out. What a great day though after not getting out for atleast a month.

Thanks for the report. Did you catch them all in that 380-450 range? Also, what did you catch 'em on?

Chad, thanks for the report. Been a long Summer without my boat while it was getting restored. I'm heading out of SI Saturday -- Dusky 233 FAC, boat name Dusky Rose. Plan to start the day trolling, maybe bottom fish while out far, then back nearshore and look for schools of bait.

Dusky Rose....I have a (older) 256 FAC love it!

Fish were on pinks skirts, hit short outriggers, most run with no ballyhoo. Also hit a blue/white with ballyhoo and a yozuri bonita lure on the DR. All but the blackfin (200) came in 400 area.

Look forward to hearing reports from today. Considering going tomorrow but not likely.

Quick report for Saturday out of SI. Trolled 120-130, 6 little black fin tuna, one Mahi, one king, one spanish (foul hooked while speed jigging). No major weed lines, trolled temperature brakes and scattered weed lines. Mahi was on a rigged bally, rest were bare lures. The blacks hit a speed jig being trolled, a Billy Bait on long shot, and spoon.

Lyman and I got in about 3 hours of trolling today. Plenty of quality bites (mahi) from 140-200' when we got on the weeds. We went 3 for 5 with a few short strikes. It wasn't the most enjoyable day on the water, with a brisk north wind, but dinner tasted good

netted some mullet and then headed offshore to TIger Red and Lead Wreck area to try slow trolling them. Caught 3 sharks only. Left and went to Pelican Flats. Trolled Pelican, one knock down on billy bait way back, nothing else. Headed out further to try to find temp break. Never saw the temp change, but, ended up stopping at a little weed line that had formed in about 170' of water. Stopped to check it out, could see small jacks under the weeds, saw a little shark and while sitting there I was pretty sure I saw some blue green like a dolphin swim by down about 20' below the surface. Decided to troll it. Skirted Bally, Billy Bait, Lil' Chugger with Bally, and Naked Bally. Trolled North on the inshore side, no strikes, but, saw a dolphin jump, so felt good there were fish on this weedline. Turned around, trolled back south on the inshore side, nothing. Crossed and trolled north on offshore side, still no strikes, but, saw dolphin again jump. Turned around and trolled south on offshore side, still no strikes. Varied the speed, changed color skirts, etc but nothing. Of course, having seen 3 maybe 4 dolphin, I was pretty sure there were fish here...
So we picked a spot, stopped, put in some of my secret weapon liquid chum, and pitched some live baits. Occupied the time with a light tackle rod catching a few of the little jacks, man they were ferocious. What are they, by the way? Almaco Jacks? About 10 minutes later, we are hooked up on a dolphin. left him in the water for a bit but no others, so in the bag she goes. The weed line was drifting pretty fast, and we were just bumping the motors trying to hold position in the chum slick. Couple sharks, of course. About 15 minutes later, the little jacks are still attacking the mullet we are pitching, but, that commotion seemed to bring a dolphin by. Pitched a mullet to it and he semi-ignored it until the little jacks attacked it...Once he saw them going for it, he crushed it. Fun to watch. We left him in and hooked up 2 more immediately. One spit, and 2 came aboard. Ended up a fun day, hooked 8, only put 5 on the boat due to some crew oriented technical issues, LoL.

Nice report and heck of an effort to boat them keepers

The wife and I went out of SI yesterday. We ran all the way out to 250 before deploying lines. Just as we were finishing getting the spread set, we got bit on a green squid chain with green machine. It ended up being a 12lb dolphin that went in the box. We stayed out between 230 and 500 for a couple more hours with not another bite. We came back in trolling and got 1 tiny blackfin, then 2 cudas at around 130. That north wind made things pretty messy in the afternoon. There were very scattered weeds out deep, but nothing that could be trolled.

Hope to be back out fishing soon, after being on land for the past six weeks. Does anyone see a break in the weather in the next week.
Just checked windfinder.com Their report says only day with less than 5 ft seas is next mon. Does anyone see any different reports ?

Nice report Chad. Capt. Billy/Right Stuff
