that rail line is actually going to go down to Miami, but it will have limited stops, and if I recall, none in Brevard.

As for land owners........................last I heard the Seventh Day Adventists were the largest private land owners in the State. They own all the farm land south of 192 to well north of State Road 50 around the St. Johns.

that's the east coast.

SW FL is full of Midwesterners (Ohio, Michigan, Indiana) who don't know the left lane is for traffic doing >50mph.

You all just convinced me to sell my house in Stuart.

Don't forget the cottonmouths, diamond back rattlers, pine rattlers, pygmy rattlers and coral snakes....and, oh--pythons.

Florida is fine...don't let all this negative talk scare you away. I have a place in the Keys and just bought a house in the country outside of Gainesville. 30 minutes or so to crowds (and stores) if you want them but totally rural where my house is. Deer, gators, wild turkeys, bald eagles, sandhill cranes. I love it. I'd never move back to NY.....

Deseret Ranch is about 300,000 acres I believe centered around Holopaw. Have a friend who got on as cowboy with them after high school. They also recently purchased a large amount of St. Joe timber land north of Panama City.

My family has been in North Florida since the 1830s but this area is mostly quarterbacks now. Those who moved to South Florida from up north somewhere and have moved a quarter of the way back. Still would not live anywhere else.

Thanks for pointing me in the right directions guys. After all your advice and a little more internet research I am finding some possibilities that are closer to what I'm used to. Mulberry is looking like an area in which I would want to live and accessible to work. How long would it take to trailer to tampa bay area. Are ramps a crowded nightmare or bearable towards southern part of bay?

Mulberry... Phosphate mines and speed traps. I broke down there once.

Mulberry really isn't bad. Probably 30-45 mins to the ramp at the mouth of the Alafaya? That's a good ways up the bay from the Skyway/mouth of the bay, but it's a big, popular ramp.

Check out Fishhawk.

Polk county has lots of small towns and lots of rural space still, compared to the rest of Central Florida. For someone who doesn't want urban, that's about as far as you can get from Tampa sprawl and Orlando/Disney sprawl. Check out each of the little towns you're considering very carefully for things like schools, property values, sinkholes, etc. Basically, there are two industries in rural Polk county. Agriculture and phosphate mining. Some of the towns are little left-over shells with minimal down-towns left. Some are quite nice.

Sinkholes can be a problem if you're near a grove and there's a freeze. The citrus farmers pump millions of gallons of water onto the trees during frosts, which can drop the ground water enough to cause serious sinkholes.

I live in Lakeland.. Its not as rural as people say. Most of the newer housing is zero-lot homes. I live on 1.3 acres and in a subdivision. THAT is impossible to find in all but 3 developments.

I love Lakeland, if you want to live in Polk Co - I'd suggest S. Lakeland. Not in the city limits.. Depending on the size of house you are looking for I got one for sale

What is the problem with phosphate mines? Is phosphate for chem/agri or for aggregate? I think they mine for phosphate in nc down east but not sure what purposes product is being produced for.

The phosphate is for ag I believe. Nothing wrong really except for the bald uniform shaped hills that dot the landscape. I'd look in to Citrus Hernando county areas but might be slightly outside of your region. Small town feel, close to or on the water. Hop on the veterans and be in Tampa in 30-60 minutes.
