Default Flying into Key Largo

Wife and I are going to spend 4-5 days in Key Largo late August. We can fly into Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. Will be renting a car so we are looking for the least amount of hassle from getting your bags to getting your car. I'm thinking we go with the smaller airport............?

Thanks

That would be Ft. Lauderdale, by a mile. Much easier to get in and out of. I avoid Miami at all cost.

Ft.Lauderdale is at least an hour car ride farther away then Miami. If you don't mind the smaller airports and planes fly into Key Largo. Where you staying?

Thanks, I don't mind the drive. We have narrowed it down to either Key Largo Bay Marriott Beach Resort or Key Largo Grande Resort & Beach Club, A Hilton Resort. Both of them look good and they are priced about the same. We were going to stay at Hawks Cay but I don't really plan to do any fishing. Snorkeling, Kayaking and some site seeing.

Ft. Lauderdale by far. Every car rental is in the terminal so there's no need to get on a bus. It's a little of a hike to get to it depending on your gate, but getting in and out of the airport is a breeze and you're on the Florida turnpike in no time. You'll pay a couple extra 3 dollars maybe for the extra miles. After missing 2 flights trying to get to MIA due to traffic, dropping the car offsite, getting on the bus, etc. I will never fly into there unless its a stop-over to somewhere else. I wish I could offer some advise on the resorts. We typically stay at Hawks Cay.

Thanks again

Now I'm not really sure where we want to stay.............looking for suggestions. What we do want to do is this.........hit both John Pennekamp and Bahia Honda state park. They both seem to have what we want to see and do, snorkeling, kayaking and just sitting on the beach. I thought if we stayed in Key Largo we would not have to drive far to Pennekamp, Bahia Honda looks to be about a 60 mile drive.

I would concurr with the FLL choice. But the car rental has moved to a central location in the deck in the middle of the terminal buildings. You do have to get a bus but very easy. In fact have one person go get the car while the other waits on luggage.

I have been to both the locations you mentioned, but it has been several years. Of the two I liked the Marriott a little better. Not sure why.

Have a great time.

Save yourself the extra hour and fly into MIA. Hop on the bus and grab your car. Take 826 west to the turnpike South. That drops you onto US1 and it's another 30/35 minutes to the Marroitt.

I stayed at Key Largo Marriott back end of Jan early Feb. Liked it very much. I flew into Miami.....I didn't think it was that bad, from plane landing to Marriott maybe 1.5 hrs with rental car pick-up. FYI I fished with Lyin' Hawaian..who is right at resort, caught a lot of fish, not anything huge but fun. The sites on back country fishing are amazing, am crocodile, bald-eagle, saw-fish, bonnet-head shark, dolphin etc

have fun

The Key Largo Bay Marriott Beach Resort it is. With my AAA membership and some other promotion a bay side room with king bed came to $117 a night. Now I just need to get a list of restaurants together.

Will also be flying into Ft. Lauderdale, Southwest had some great deals nobody could beat.

too funny none of you guys are from south fla...

i would say fort lauderdale airport as well, yes its 30 miles north, but when you compare the trip from one to the other, i think its a better choice, plus tixx into fll seem cheaper, the rental car is deffinatly better.

i would say to look at some of the smaller resorts as well, there are some nice ones there. too bad chica had the fire, that tiki bar was very cool..

We dont have an airport in Key Largo. You can fly into Marathon which is about 1 hour south of Key Largo. FTL is smaller and might be more convienient but MIA has rental car booths at the airport and a shuttle to their lots. Either one is no big deal.

Stayed at the Marriott several times and it has been great every time. The resturant onsite is not bad at all but there is some great eating all around Key Largo. The fish house gets my top vote in Key Largo. Very close to John Pennikamp which as some of the best snorkeling in the keys. Bahia Honda is worth the drive. It may be 60 miles but it is probably the prettiest 60 miles you'll ever drive in the contigious 48 states. Can't wait to head back down in a few weeks.

Plans are change. We looked into Coral Lagoon Resort. All the reviews have been great. For not much more money you get a 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath home.

Fly into FLL. Easier in and out. Unless MIA is MUCH cheaper. The extra 30 miles is pretty easy.

I've stayed at both the Marriot and the Key Largo Grande. Proposed to my wife at the Grande. Can't speak for Coral Lagoon Resort. Both the Marriot and Grande are great places to stay in Key Largo. Both have a private beach and boat facilities. However, the facilities at the Marriot are FREE if you are staying in a room. The Grande charges $50 per night and doesn't have a boat ramp. The ramp at the Marriot is a little steep, but there is a good ramp just up the road to put in at. I wouldn't eat at the restaurants at either location. Rediculous in price. Be sure to check out Hobo's Bar and Grill. GREAT burgers.

Default Just use Miami. Lauderdale can be a pain too.

I stayed at the Marriot last year for a wedding and it was very nice. It also sits next door to the new Big Chill Tiki Bar and pool and The Carribean Club beyond that for the late nate band and smokey bar experience. IT'S NICE TO BE ABLE TO WALK TO THESE PLACES BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE YOUR CHANCES DRIVING AROUND THE KEYS AFTER JUST ONE BEER. Nice dive/snorkel boat operation out of the Marriot. The Hilton is nice and is in Rock Harbor with very little around it but prettier water in that area with a white sandy bottom. The Hilton pool sits on the road with no views of the water. If you want to get away from the big resort feel go just down the road to Atlantic Bay Resort (MM 92) and take a waterfront bungalow. Small Resort (18 rooms)and quiet beach without jet ski rentals.

Food Recomendations...
Eat breakfast at Chads MM92.
Eat lunch at Calypso MM MM101.
Have Fritters and Cocktails @ Alabama Jacks on Card Sound Road.
Dinner at Island Grill Islamorada MM86?

It's not an hour more from FLL compared to MIA. In some cases it can be less time as MIA can get pretty clogged up. Not to mention the pricing and convenience advantages of FLL. The other thing I like about FLL is that if you end up staying the night near the airport coming or going, you are only a couple of miles (with no crazy MIA traffic) from the beach and tourist areas (like Las Olas).

I've done both and now I just stick with FLL
