Default Captiva vs Hawks Cay

Planning a family trip this summer and I'm trying to decide between going to the south seas on Captiva or to Hawks Cay. Wife and 3 boys (11, 9, 8 yrs old). Currently plan to trailer 25' bay boat down from Alabama.

Would like to do a little bit of fishing (with a day or so inshore/backcountry guided), boating, and some beach/pool time.

I realize either one will be quite a haul. I've done a few trips to Marathon with the guys, but we were really only there to fish, and that was several years ago.

Thanks for any suggestions

.....and my wife can't do any offshore type fishing or boating due to motion sickness. Rough rides across the bay don't bother her but 2 minutes on a drift and she's done.

The kids will have a blast at the water park that is built into South Seas Plantation additionally if there's bad weather you can run up and down Pine Island Sound and really hit a lot of places.
Boca Grande , cabbage key, Captiva, North Captiva Cayo costa State Park you name it . Bokeelia, etc.

We have been to both plenty....

I like Hawks Cay, but Captiva - South Seas is much more relaxing for some reason and with kids that age its a no brainer.
On a great day you can cruise out the inlet and anchor up at Gulf beaches to the north. Or on any day you can do the same on the inside. Lots to see and do on the inside.

For 1st trip there, I'd stay at the north end (Marina Villas) near the Marina and other amenities (Pool, T-dock, deli, and main Marina) and close to sunset beach.
Super easy to jump on boat and go. Drop and pick people up, etc.- Everything on the end is walkable (or bike-able).

You can Launch your 25' at the boat ramp on site (make sure not super LOW tide) at south end of resort and run it over the Main Marina on north end. They have a trailer lot. Reserve the slip and trailer parking when you make your reservation.

Oh God, not even a discussion. South Seas all day errday.

Unless there's red tide.

I've been to both several times. Captiva in a runaway.

Another vote for SS. So much to do onsite and the rest of Captiva and Sanibel - in any weather. And, so many boating destinations are within easy run.

Captiva and South Seas are a different kind of relaxation that you don't get in the Keys.

Thanks for the advice. I have been leaning towards Captiva as well. Just have to convince my wife that a trip to the Keys may not be as idyllic as she imagines.

Any recs for an inshore guide?

So much more to do at South Seas than Hawks, IMO, especially with your kids ages and wife offshore issues.

Never been to Hawks Cay but always heard good things about it. I was at South Seas 2 weeks ago and it’s a very family oriented resort with some recent, extensive remodeling.
I’m headed to the Keys next Monday and thought about stopping at Hawks to have lunch. Staying in Key West for a night and then headed to Little Palm Island the next night.

Personally, we didn't care for Hawks Cay. Been there, done that, IMO, it was a little too "stuffy" for us. I would keep riding to Key West, much better places to eat. We stay in Summerland/Big Pine area in the summer. A few years ago when Little Palm was practically destroyed, we walked through some of the resort and it was so sad to see.

Hurricane Irma practically wiped out Little Palm Island. It has now been totally rebuilt and open for business. I’m anxious to see the results.

Me and my family have done both locations. Didn’t own a boat when we went to SS but rented a pontoon and went to Cabbage. It was awesome. Kids loved the pools and beach.

Hawk’s was one of our favorite trips because we had a boat then. I love the keys, but wouldn’t really do Hawk’s again. It’s really expensive and not truly the Keys IMO. We now go to Cudjoe and stay at Venture Out. Fishing seemed to be less pressured and the content keys are right in your backyard.

Keys just seem to be changing so much that it’s not the same as it was even 5 years ago.

Been to Hawk's Cay and South Seas many times. For your family, South Seas would be my choice.

I've done both numerous times and would also agree with South Seas for the family. Plus it'll save you 5-6 hours travel time, each way.

Been to both with the family many times. South Seas for sure. Rent a 6 person golf cart for your stay and leave the car parked.

I've heard Hawk's Cay was having issues with low-lifes from Miami renting condos and having huge parties. No clue if this has been fixed.

The other issue is people just stop by and crash the pool and bar on way home from lower keys. They really don't have control of the place.
Probably more fun for a boys trip - so I hear....

I am also planning a trip in June to Captiva and trailering a boat from Louisiana . Would anyone share a list of boating excursions that can be had from there? The boat is a 36YF. Thanks
