Default Over head bridge at Founders park? WTF

Bouncing around and came across an article that talks about a Pesdestrian bridge by Founders park? Talk about traffic jam galore...everyday...Who the hell came up with this foolish idea.

Not sure what you mean. Wouldn’t a pedestrian bridge improve traffic flow or do you mean during the construction?

I am in that area consistently and don’t see the pedestrian counts to support this project. Certainly there are far more pedestrians crossing US1 in the area of the 82-83 than at the 86 by FP.

10 years ago FDOT spent $4,500,000 on a 200’ pedestrian bridge that spans State Road 878 at US1 just south of South Miami. I will drive by there this morning and take note as there typically won’t be anyone using it. I would guess that perhaps a dozen people use it daily, if that. I would be thrilled to be underestimating the number but it just doesn’t get used. That is $102.73 for each person crossing over the 10 year period since it opened, and that does not take into account maintenance and inspections.

they just daydream of ways to spend money in useless ways. How many people cross in that spot/area?

Only time I go there is for the Nautical Flee Market. I'm suspecting that'll be the only time it really gets used.

I was thinking same, but they hold a lot of events there that backs traffic on weekends. Not arguing for or against although I am for most things if they improve traffic flow through islamorada. Biggest one would be replacing the drawbridge as that really backs up but fortunately not too many sailboats go through.

There are actually lots of events that result in ped crossing in that area. I don't think it is a good idea personally. People will still cross US1 on the road instead climbing the ramp/stairs.

Waste of $$ but Mike is for it. He owns Mangrove Mike's so if you want to bend his ear stop in for breakfast and let him know your concerns.

I live at mm 82 and am for the walkway. Pre Covid there were weekly events at the park and there is just not enough parking on the west side of US1 to accomodate all who want to attend. During these events (usually Sat and Sunday) the police shut down traffic about every 10 min in one or 2 locations along US1 to allow for pedestrians. This makes it very difficult to go northbound or southbound during the day which causes an issue for EMS and ambulance services as well as fire and police.

The Snake Creek Bridge is also an issue but any remedy for that is a long way off.

... or more enforcement of these motorcycles driving at high speeds? The double fatal at the 96.5 last night was needless.

there was just one on 1/31 late morning at mm114, I wondered if it was a bike that had passed us on turnpike around homestead not much earlier. He had to be doing 100+.

The original thought was a portable pedestrian bridge for the Nautical Flea Market and similar events, but the costs were prohibitive. So a permanent bridge was proposed. The idea really wasn't all that popular until the charter school across the street, which uses the park for its PE classes, got behind the idea. At that time, the thought was that all the costs would be borne by the state and were relatively minor for an FDOT project. Then costs to the Village escaladed and utility relocation and who would pay for that became a factor. Village Council members rotated off and the bridge became an election issue. After the election results, the new Council punted the issue with this latest decision to ask the governor to cancel. As a resident, I opposed the bridge from the beginning. I supported a traffic light as I lived at the marina in the park, but those in the community and on the Council who claimed to care about traffic flow were dead set against traffic lights. As an aside, the Village never has come to grips with the question: "Are we a destination, or are we just a place for tourists to pass through?"

I'm not defending the bridge in south miami but to speculate on its lack of traffic simply because you rarely see anyone using it when YOU drive by.... COME ON MAN!!

The bridge is for the few days where the traffic is really bad...but will make it worse the rest of the year. Locals all know when it is coming and avoid travel at all costs. People will be gawkers every time they see someone walking up the stairs..especially in bikini's or short shorts. the portable one sounded like a good idea. The military has to have something that could be modified to work.

OR maybe make it under ground...if they could build the tunnels to NYC in the 1930's ...they can cross Over Seas highway in the 2020's

Just say you don't like it. Trying to claim that the existence of a pedestrian bridge is going to somehow make traffic worse because of gawkers, or whatever, is absurd.

He is correct. When roadways have structures or trees close to the travel lanes, traffic slows. An bridge would be even more visually confining because of the vertical structures close to the road on either side and the overheard bridge.
