Default Weekend Wahoo

Over the past few weeks, I've been getting together gear for Wahoo Fishing. Yesterday was the day. We started to run south and at 7:25 a.m., it was lines in for us. We started our troll and around 11:15 a.m. when we hit The Elbow in Key Largo, it was game time, this thing ripped the 80W. Once he was hooked, we started gaining on him and we did a mistake, we switched fishermen. Just like that, the line was soft. He was gone. But we did manage to give him a root canal and a taste that we need to come back for more. Needless to say, we all got hooked Yesterday.

Positives for me: First time fishing my own rig for wahoo which was a great feeling ( I've always fished on a buddies boats due to my previous boat size). Although we didn't land him, we hooked to what I believe is a 45LB range wahoo.

Anyone else get tight this week?

The boat was in gear, around 3-4 knots at this point. I know personally I made a mistake, I brought the gaff out from under the gunnel too soon Lol.

At this point, I was helping my buddy by hand lining up front but when the switch happened, the line went dead.

Disappointing at first but I feel pretty good given it being the first time running lines and the new boat. Would of been happier with that light pole in the in the boat.

I don't slow the boat that much. I keep it at 6 mph and use the rod until you hit the leader. Hawaiian's call it Ono and it freezes well.

Yeah I wouldn’t slow down that much next time, along with the drag probably being a little too tight to do that to the fish. If she’s on the surface don’t let her get her head down and keep her skiing in to the gaff! If you don’t learn something out there everyday you’re doing it wrong! Good luck

I spend most of my time looking for dolphin and sails but trying to expand with a few wahoo....just added a couple of 50s so that should help.

If you need to switch anglers while fighting from the rod holder its not a big deal, just have the two guys sync up, one hand over the other, and don't stop moving the handle. Then the first angler can slide away while the backup slides in. Have to keep *constant* pressure on the fish.

I'd back off on the drag as well. I've seen a lot of wahoo boated but never seen that. That's messed up. and yeah, don't drop all the way to idle. Keep it in gear above idle.

Trim your skirts above the hook point to improve hookup ratio as well.

Default Weekend Wahooo

I hear you. I was actually planning to run North last Sunday but last minute decided to head south. I def got a bite. My buddy ran a few miles north of Lighthouse Point and only got a king on a planer.

I did too. I added a 50 and got a good deal on an 80W Tiagra a few months ago which is kinda what led me to do this Lol Got to start somewhere is the way I look at it.

I'll be looking to go out again soon once we get back from Tennessee. They are out there though!

Thanks Burgmane. I want to say that's where I dropped the ball. It hit the 80 that my buddy was running. We were in sync and he handed it off to me perfectly. But then the 3rd angler driving, wanted a crack at it and I remember asking him 3 times, are you sure you want to do this? Lol That's exactly where the line went slack on me. We were not in sync.

Good note on the drag. I realized now it was way too tight. I've been told to keep it to where the line starts creeping just little and that's it.

I def will trim the skirts!! They are long.

Well be out of town for the Christmas holiday but def looking to go out before the New Year and drag some lines!
