Default 1st trip to the keys

hi, we are planning our first trip from Fort Lauderdale to Duck Key in July, what is the best route? we have a 25' chaparral cuddy cabin and we are headed to Hawks Cay for a 4 day stay. We are going with another couple and would like to know A. the best route B. any cool places to stop for lunch on the way and C. fun things to do on the boat while we are there. (fishing understandably but wondered if there was anything else to see while we were there.) Thank you in advance

Inside route from Miami - Channel 5 bridge ... then Hawks Channel to Hawks Cay ... Most scenic ..

Stop at Gilberts for a cold one ,,, then Islamorada tiki bar ... then head down from there ...

have fun.

Run outside to Stiltsville, weather permitting. Enter Biscayne bay through Stiltsville channel, deep and well marked. You can explore a Stiltsville house if you like. They are owned by the Nation Park Service and are available for public use but you must apply for a permit. Contact the Stiltsville Trust for permit details.

Head down Biscayne Bay to Gilbert’s as mentioned above. Fuel for both the boat and the crew are available.

The Tiki Bar is located at The Postcard Inn. Access is through the Whale Harbor Channel, just past Plantion Key Right in front of the tiki bar is a great sand bar.

Bud N Mary’s in Islamorada is cool. Buy some shrimp and feed the pet tarpon.

Have fun and post some pics.

I agree with stopping at Gilberts for a drink but I would say that last time I was down gas in Tavernier Creek was about $1 cheaper than Gilberts

Outside to stiltville channel to ICW to Boca Chita Key for overnight. ICW thru to gilberts for fuel and drink, then ICW to Snake creek, fuel if needed, to ocean if do able,if not, on to Indian Key channel to main oceanside channel to Hanks Cay. When leaving run back oceanside at about 400' and run and gun for mahi. Enjoy.

These posts bring back memories . I'll guess it's been 20+ years since I made the trip from Sebastian to 2 mile bridge via the inside. Stopped at Gilberts for fuel, had a drink , fell in ----, and headed south 2 days later.
Have done the outside side Hawk's Channel route a number of times, but the inside route was fun and beautiful , running a tight channel and seeing untold quantities and species of marine life.

Now , at 76 , maybe it's time to revisit the experience . I'll keep you posted on my trip. It will happen !!!. Capt. Billy/Right Stuff
