My father went out to go for a boat ride only to find out some lowlife stole one of his lower units. Is this something more likely to be stolen for personal use or to sell on Craigslist or similar? I've heard of props being stolen but an entire lower unit? This is on Snead Island off Palmetto.

I am a recently retired undercover deputy from Hillsborough. Definitely report it because usually there a group of really educated thieves that sell them to black market marinas for about 30 cents on the dollar. also put up a camera when u get a new lower unit as they return a lot of time because they know u have a brand new one and it was easy pickens. Worthless human being that shouldn't be breathing our air. Sorry for your loss hope all works out. I have conducted surveillance on a few groups that target lower units and have put them in prison. Good luck.

Some dealers just remove 'em and store 'em inside.

About 4 years ago, our community which includes private deeded slips, was having our marina dredged.
I had just moved in, bought a slip, never launched my boat, stored it in a storage yard WITHIN our gated community,
and bingo, the first night, some bast--d stole 3 lower units, all Yamaho 250 + .
Really piss-- me off. Felt violated then, and again, when my insurance company prorated the age of my 5 year old lower unit
, and paid me $2700. against a $3600 +- replacement. Lost 3 weeks of fishing to boot.2
Thieves should be castrated and paraded on main street. Capt. Billy/Right Stuff

What motor is that? Looks like an F200

I'm going to guess a 300. My 300 was stolen a year ago. Shortly after, a friend of mine retrofitted his boat with triple 300's. He was getting new electronics installed and the lower units were stoll off all three before even seeing the water. Unfortunately his deductible was $6,000.
It's a fu#$%d up world we live in. That's why I got a 125 lb German shepher patrolling my yard now.

These are F150’s on a 25 World Cat. Surprised they only took one. How long does it take to remove one? Pretty sure this was done while they were home.

That’s real unfortunate and I wish you and your dad didn’t have to deal with it.
I was out on a boat a couple months ago with one of my CG buds and he said it’s very common. The scum will slip in around 3-5am usually by kayak and snatch what they can and slip out without needing to use a boat ramp.
He discussed one thief they spent over a year trying to bust, said it took a ton of effort to catch the guy because of how slick he was.
Taking a lower unit off could be done in under 5 min considering the engine is already hanging and all the thief has to do is work 6-7 bolts and he’s gone.

Only a few bolts and some wiggling and it's off. For someone with experience it can be done in a couple minutes or less.
In my case they took the whole motor and cut all the cables so every thing had to be replaced.

The other night my neighbors came home at 1:30am, and came upon 2 dudes in our dead end canal in a gheeno. My neighbors said hello to them and they didn't even look up. Said they had no fishing rods and looked very shady. When my neighbor told me about it the next day, my first thought was they were looking for lower units. The only other thing I could think of is they are poaching snook and laid their rods down.
