Default BOLO Jupiter ICW South

Some of you will be familiar with this guy, Jonathan Selby aka Jonathan Journey who built a floating shack in Jupiter. Now he’s equipped it with a pair of old, mismatched 25HP 2-stroke outboards and is headed to South America. Needless to say, the vessel can only be controlled in near perfect conditions, and he’s dragging a derelict sailboat alongside. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

I can only imagine the kind of damage this thing could do when he loses it, and he has zero insurance. He’s an older guy who has a Facebook page and numerous videos on YouTube. I tried to convince him to go north and run the Okeechobee Waterway to the GOM, but he wants to head south through Miami. Adventure and doing your own thing is great, but not when it puts others at risk.

Jonathan Selby is a nut case.

A little background, as I just stumbled on to the forum after checking his FB page. I personally met Jonathan back in December 2017 when he washed up on shore in Brunei (Borneo Island) in front of the five star hotel I was staying at. I was an expat living in Singapore at the time and was in Brunei for a few weeks on business. Word spread quickly that "Santa Claus" just arrived on a boat hahaha. But as soon as we got to see his boat and Jonathan himself, "hobo" is what came to mind. True enough, after tying his raft up, he heads to the local church (Brunei is Muslim country but there two Christian churches) and starts peddling his bullshit about being on a mission etc. Apparently he crossed into the country's territory without securing a visa because he thought the rules did not apply to him and that being on "God's mission" he did not need one. After a day or two parking his barely floating piece of junk on prime waterfront, he had to move it to a nearby dock area. He left it there for a few days while the country had the biggest wind storm in recent memory with huge waves that smashed his raft to pieces. There were better places he could have secured his raft, and more importantly he could have secured it in a way that could have prevented its destruction. INTERESTINGLY, he claimed the lines were cut and that his boat was sabotaged (familiar???). Nope, as a sailor myself, it was nothing more than very poor seamanship. He also claims to have "sailed" the Philippines, nope, he was drifting most the time, and the seas were simply were large enough that he did not hit anything. Also, in his previous FB page (which FB shut down - I think he posted something very offensive), he claims he was stopped by "pirates," I saw the video, NOPE there as well, those were simply local government militia. Also, when his last raft broke to pieces, guess what? except for a few items (barrels mostly), he left his junk on the shoreline. I would not be surprised if he simply walks or floats away from the mess that he has created near Peanut Island,

I just wanted to share one more insight. In my opinion, Jonathan is the type that wanders around Southeast Asia with a puffed up sense of importance. People in poor countries gave him the time of day because he was a white foreigner who maybe had a little bit more money than they did. Also, his rafts? made by local fishermen, who typically have more boat making experience than he does. That is why when he made his current monstrosity, he was way out of his league. One more thing that has really kind of irritated me over the years is when Jonathan went to small coastal villages in Malaysia and was a complete mooch, These are people who have very little, but are friendly and hospitable. Something Jonathan would take advantage to get free housing and food. He had numerous posting on this in his previous FB page (he would post photos occasionally on his new FB one). I also found it a little pervy that he would constantly surround himself with little children while he was overseas. Again, he would occasionally post photos on his FB page that showed that.

Finally, how do you get him to move on. As a boater, I have an intense dislike for people that don't follow the rules on the water, specially on the ICW where I have spend a lot of time boating. People should send email to local government officials with jurisdiction over the area. Include the coast guard. Note what you think the suspected infractions are or potential dangers are 1) raw sewage into the waters (make him prove to the authorities that he is not doing it - I mean honestly, do you think he using a pump out service or event bringing that crap to shore to be properly disposed of? NO!) 2) creating a navigation hazard - one day a boater is going to hit one of those sunken vessels and some is going to get hurt 3) the last sunken vessel had a fuel tank in it - at least based on the video before he posted one the sunken blue one - I have not see any environment mitigation and I am sure that fuel went right into the water 4) he just added another vessel - he knows he is in some kind of trouble - that is why he took down the video - his "new" boat is another junker that creates more navigation hazards 5) I am sure the businesses around him are concerned (they have millions of dollars worth of boats that could be damaged by him going adrift. Those of you in the area, reach out to them, I am sure they would appreciate knowing that there are some peoples that see him for what he is. Perhaps they too could reach out to local government officials 6) Pressure, pressure, pressure the police and local government officials by email and phone calls.

Some people may find Jonathan as a quaint old man living his life and really not doing any harm. NOPE! He lives in a country that has rules and he needs to follow them or he spoils it for the rest of the boating community.

He was planning to head north on Wednesday, but the wind was taking him south. Yeah, think about that one.

I don’t want to see the old guy get hurt or into trouble, but dayum.

One upon a time, we’d sit back and let nature sort these kinds of things out.

Not sure if this will work, but I’m sure you’ll have to be logged into Facebook to see it.

We have a new captain member?

Guess I’ve missed that. I’ve moved a turd or two, but nothing of this magnitude.

I say let him be. If it's what he wants to do, so be it. He's aware of the dangers on the open sea.
Definitely some judgemental peeps here.

Would you feel that way if your boat were docked parallel to the ICW with him coming at you sideways with no insurance and no control?

It’s not just about him.

I suggested he donate/sell the “houseboat” and hang one of those outboards on the sailboat. He would have a viable shot then. Seriously.
