Default What is drift fishing?

This may be a dumb question, but what is drift fishing, specifically for bottom fish like mutton snapper and grouper in the Keys. I've always anchored near the reef and used something like a knocker rig or Carolina rig with live or dead bait cast down current behind the boat. What is drifting? Is it the same thing basically, but with no anchor and drifting over these same spots? Do you cast your rig out and let it drag on the bottom or do you fish it directly under the boat slightly off the bottom? Seems like you would get hung up if you're dragging the bottom. Hoping someone will enlighten me. Thanks.

Typically drop down under boat Seems like you would get hung up if you're dragging the bottom. You crank up a few times to get just off the bottom Hoping someone will enlighten me. Thanks. You can also drift with flat lines on the surface just above structure.
See above in red.

Plenty of weight, as vertical as possible....3way rig, live bait if possible

Catching Sea Bass we set up a drift that will cross a reef , captain calls it out when we are about to begin to pass over it and we drop lines . Catch a couple fish . Then move 30 yrds (?) along the reef and do it again until we've covered the reef or limited out . Fun , usually fast action fishing tossing small ones back and rebaiting . The opposite of the trolling boredom . Good to toss a line or 2 with a live bait on the surface also .
