Default Abacos Update?

Anyone know how they are doing over there? Basically looking for an update on how their recovery is going ? How many businesses/marinas are up an running (if any)?

What area?

Green Turtle is quickly recovering. Lots of businesses opened back up but some still have a bit to go. Power is back on in most places. Green Turtle Club Marina is open for business.

Guana I’m not too sure about. I know nippers is in the process of rebuilding.

Elbow is in rough shape from what I understand. Still no non generator power there.

Marsh is a mess but maxwells and several other places have opened back up.

Treasure is a long way off from any progress

all in all though, the water is beautiful and the people are great. Come support..

All the out islands Great Guana Cay (except Bakers Bay with large private power system), Man-o-War, and Elbow Cay all still do not have power from the mainland only via local generators. Just had a friend back from helping reconstruct a destroyed house on Guana and it is all still a major work in progress. They were hopeful that power could be restored in the next couple of months, but those power cables are under the Sea of Abaco and everthing supporting those power feeds has been damaged or destroyed. They were removing power meters from damaged homes on Guana while he was there so that if/when they do restore power it does not start to cause fires. Also someone said that Nippers was being rebuilt, but my buddy said there was nothing left even the whole dune that it was build on was gone.

Marsh Harbor and Treasure are essentially destroyed - it will be years before any real semblance or normalcy returns and until those marinas are rebuilt there is no reason to go. Treasure did restore fuel service, but essentially nothing else. You can't even get fresh water from the taps. Green Turtle is in better shape, but I would not plan or bother to go further along the Abacos past Green Turtle to these other islands this year - there will simply be nowhere for you to dock and few resources even if you do go there.

I'd recommend following the "Dive Guana" facebook page. They've been posting pretty regular updates. It's still just awful down there, but they are chipping away at it.

Spanish was the first of the out islands in the Abacos to have their marina open back up. Boat Harbour Marina at Abaco Beach Resort is being rebuilt as we speak with an opening date of April 1st according to Kevie Thomas. As of January 31st, they have an interim fuel dock that's currently open from 9am - 4pm offering gasoline. Diesel will be offered soon. The marina HAS to be opened up and operational by April 16th for the White Marlin Roundup... the first of the series of Skip Smith's Billfish Tournaments all being held there. The Custom Boat Shootout is held in May after that. I've heard they have a direct power line of their own from the power company due to their massive power requirements during tournament time, so that may have helped speed the rebuilding process up for them. I wouldn't expect much else to be available on Marsh for a while.

I just saw photos of Nippers in the middle of their rebuild, so they are hard at work to be ready for season. I know Firefly has been working hard on Elbow Cay serving a couple hundred meals every day to the locals. I'm sure the reports will be more numerous in the next two months as season approaches. Lord knows they can all use our continued help and support. Just a handful of things I'm aware of so far.

Please come support Abaco! Green Turtle Cay is open for business! Gas and diesel availed at Sunset Marine and the Green Turtle Club. Power and water are on all over the Cay. Sundowners and Pinapples are open and hopping. Plymouth Rock (David’s), MacIntosh Resturant, Two Shortys, Cindy from Wrecking Tree is serving take out from home. The Green Turtle Club will be 100% open March 1, now the docks, fuel and convince store is open. Sids Grocery is open 6 days a week and also has propane. The local cruising community is hosting many get togethers and has really pitched in for the cleanup.

Default Great Guana Cay

We are on a mooring in Settlement Harbor, Great Guana Cay and have been for roughly 3 weeks. As noted above, things are rough and some of what is going on doesn't make any sense. For example, BPL could be renewing the electrical transmission/distribution infrastructure here and get electricity to everyone while they find/repair the transmission line(s) from Marsh Harbour. However, BPL is taking a phased approach by first finding/repairing the transmission lines and THEN fixing the electrical distribution infrastructure. Similarly, apparently Bakers Bay has its own generating plant, but they can't "sell" power to the rest of the island because BPL has a monopoly on "selling" electrical power in the Bahamas. Until then, things are running on generators kind of like a time-warp back to the 1960's. Aliv cel phone service is good, BTC not quite as good as their tower was damaged and has not been fully repaired.

The good news is that Nippers is actively re-building and, despite reports to the contrary, the much of the structure, except for the bar itself, survived the storm. The kitchen looks like they could start serving tomorrow. Grabbers is being totally re-built and may be ready before Nippers. While no dockage is currently available, Orchid Bay Marina has received enough material to repair one of their two docks and construction is expected to start soon. Orchid Bay is selling gas & diesel but they do not have a fuel dock yet. There are two restaurants open on the island, Mama's Kitchen and Clydes at Orchid Bay. There is a small grocery / liquor store. Golf carts are available from Dive Guana, Donna Sands and others. Dive Guana does have some boats to rent.

Rather than the sound system from Nippers / Grabbers what you hear most every day is the sound of heavy equipment demolishing houses and taking the debris away, and hammers/saws & etc. from homes being repaired / rebuilt. The water is just as clear as it was before Dorian, the beaches are still here, as are the fish. The bottom line here is that they really need to see new faces here that are putting money into the local economy.

Spanish has been open. We got fuel there on our way down to take supplies to gtc and guana. That was back at the end of September. Buddies fished out of there for wahoo back in late October early November. They are open.

you could probably ask on Facebook either on walkers reborn 2020 page or abaco relief alliance (think that’s the one headed by Cody Holcomb) someone on one of those could probably give you an update on Grand

I ended up emailing Bahamas Tourism and they said they had a team visit Rosie's and confirmed that they are operational. I asked specifically about the docks being rebuilt and gas being available but just got that they are operational. Still haven't been unable to get through on the phone. Not sure if that's a Rosie thing or if cell service is down over there

Got a VM from Suzanne in Spanish. They are up and running. She said email is much more reliable than phones. It is my understanding they they have gas diesel and can take CCs

I recently booked rooms in Green Turtle. They are, for the most part, up and running. Currently no shore power. They said shore power should be up soon. Golf carts are available for rent. From what I gather The main part of the resort is fully operational. The villas are being worked on. Several bars and restaurants open. It is my understanding that the have gas and diesel and can take CCs.

Firefly is open but limited. Below is a copy and paste from the email they sent me.
We can accommodate 2 boats but please note our dock does not have running water or electricity. As far as night life goes On Da Beach has been the spot since the storm. Abaco Inn is now open as well and Firefly will be opening next month. It won't be the same as your last visit but there are options to grab a drink after a day in the boat.

About Grand/Rosie’s....

Spoke with Dennis (a deck hand that lives there) on FB today 2/21/20 about dock situation. He says they should be ready in April/May.

Talked to GTC this AM. Docks have fuel and water. All the shore power is in and they are waiting for inspections. Power is coming from Abaco no generator. Sounded better than I thought. I'm going to try to get over in April.
