Boat Crash

Who:
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office
Patrol Operations Bureau
- Marine UnitJesse Mayer (Driver- Uninjured)
DOB: 06/12/1984
Vessel: 37 foot Center Console FreemanRobert Krysztofowicz (Driver – Deceased)
DOB: 04/17/1963
Personal watercraft: Yamaha Jet SkiWhat:
Deputies assigned to the Marine Unit are investigating a fatal vessel crash, after it struck a personal watercraft in Madeira Beach. When:
The incident occurred at about 4:50 p.m. on Friday, August 30, 2019.Where:
The incident occurred in the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Tom Stuart Causeway in Madeira Beach. Why/How:
According to deputies, at about 4:50 p.m. on Friday, August 30, 2019, 56-year-old Robert Krysztofowicz was operating a Yamaha jet ski, and was traveling northbound in the Intracoastal Waterway, just north of Tom Stuart Causeway in Madeira Beach.Deputies say 35-year-old Jesse Mayer was operating a 37 foot Center Console Freeman vessel, and was also traveling northbound in the Intracoastal Waterway, just north of Tom Stuart Causeway in Madeira Beach.

During their investigation, deputies learned Mayer’s vessel was traveling at a high rate of speed through a slow wake zone and struck the rear of the Jet Ski driven by Krysztofowicz. Mayer’s vessel then traveled over the Jet Ski and Krysztofowicz, causing fatal injuries.

Krysztofowicz was brought to the Madeira Beach Marina located at 503 150th Avenue in Madeira Beach, and was pronounced deceased by deputies at the scene.

Speed and impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

Next of kin has been notified.

The investigation continues.

Two of my family members are among the missing in Marsh Harbor.
Abaco got Nuked, we got seriously flooded and Crapped on. (Grand Bahama)
Relief supplies are flooding in, been a "Fixer" for Samaritan Purse field hospital site they set up. Our hospital got flooded, as did 60 % of our staff homes.
20 lost their homes completely. Our True value had 6ft salt water, retail store also.
But, we will reopen in one building on Tuesday, Building materials hardware and hard house goods. Inventory loss is prob 30-40% of all.
Daily drops to old folks home, diabetic supplies, Ice, water, food and gas for their 5kw Gen.
Pallet loads incoming on 9 Caravan flights and 4 DC 3's since day 1, strip 10% for staff and get the rest to church distribution locations. DC 3 was built in 1945!!
120 employees getting dirty, getting it done.
Mold remediation chems and equipment on the way, 45Kw gen for the store,
Boat is fine btw, but did try to get airborne! on the lift and strapped with 12 3400lb working load 10,000lb breaking straps.
Her third ride on that lift for a storm.
Our house and home is fine.

Well he did. Ran over a jet ski by Welch causeway bridge. Apparently never slowed down. According to police report he was I guess drunk(impaired).

Hope he looses everything and rots in jail.

You might want to contact the investigating agency and let them know you witnessed the speed and violation of the wake zone, they would probably love to hear from anyone who might have witnessed anything before or during the incident.

Similar thing happened to me years ago . Snook fishing late at night under a bridge and a CC blew thru the no wake zone going maybe 30 - 40 mph , just came out of the darkness and it happened fast . I was trolling lures in a 3 hp Jon boat crossing the channel under the draw bridge . I jumped feet first and pushed for the bottom and watched the prop go over me 5 or 6' away . Ran thru some anchored fishing boats and kept going . Them guys checked to see if I was OK and were pissed also .

RIP and prayers for the family .

Were the guys pissed because of navigation lights issues, or was your Jon properly lit? It was nice of them to stop and check on you . Not blaming you, just curious and they should have been going slowly.

What a joke, people are talking about how "bad" the storm was and they both shouldn't have been there. I work in Largo, it's a daily thing with the storms and if you cant handle the daily afternoon rain storm in a 37 ft Freeman than you need to stay on land. RIP to the guy on the jet ski and I hope the freeman operator loses his business and gets hung out to dry.

Had those flashlight type nav lights .

It was the other boaters in the area that checked (I knew some of them) - the guy that blew through kept on going . There were 3 or 4 other boats in that same no wake area fishing that got waked and were pissed also .
It looked to me like a clean single engine Contender with no rods aboard - we always figured it was some drunk salesman from the Contender dealership a couple miles down the river joy riding a boat . Seems like a big deal today but back then we were young and taking chances and just chalked it up as another weekend with a story .

When I left yesterday he was still being interviewed by detectives, though I did see someone in cuffs getting escorted to a cruiser.
We don't know the whole story yet, for all I know the impairment was the Jet Ski operators, I'll know way more this afternoon.
