Default NOAA weather balloon

While hunting grouper yesterday a buddy and I found this thing floating offshore. At first I thought it to be part of the regular gulf trash but I decided to turn around and recovered it. I followed the instruction, labeled the GPS location I found it and sending it back in. Kind neat set up, had a balloon attached to it and the note and waterproof envelope was attached as well.

Im sending it back and hoping to do my part in assisting NOAA with the weather so that when they say "less than 2" i'm not taking them over the bow. Maybe I'll get some Karma out of it....lol

Well...all of a sudden I can't post pics......working on it

Use Imgur for photo posting, it's free and easy.

I found one of those things years ago as well as some crazy looking buoy with gadgets on it. It had warnings not to mess with all over it and some stuff hanging off it. I threw it back in after we messed with just a little.

I think that's the parachute that separates from the weather balloon after it bursts at high altitude.

quite possibly. There was another balloon attached to it that probably had some type of helium or something in it, big rubber thing but it was all jacked up from the water landing and rolling around. Overall cool find

Looks like the balloon they send up to sample upper level winds. Watched a show last year about hurricane forecasts & how important those balloons are in gathering data about the jet stream & approaching fronts that steer the storm. When a hurricane approaches hundreds of the balloons are set off from points all across the country. Cool find!
