Default Power plant Bimini update

Power update #5..excellent news!
I just finished a conference call on behalf of 700 stake holders(us, bimini bay, port royal, big game) with Mr. Miller at BPL, Manager for family island power.

Rolling Black outs,( power shedding), in 4-8 hour intervals will continue thru mid next week.
They are going to be getting us a schedule so we can plan accordingly.
A 5 megawatt generator will be enroute shortly, planned to be up and running by mid next week. His crew arrives tomm. to start preplanning.
10-11 megawatts was available prior to fire.
More than that will be available next week.
I am thrilled with BPL’s approach and they are well aware the impact this would have with out a solid solution.

So I'll take it that we'll be OK for our stay June 8th to 14th.

Thanks for this update. Can you please continue to update as you get info? Possibly post the “schedule” you mentioned?

Not trying to be pessimistic but have you ever seen a deadline in the islands come true? If I had reservations in the next two months I would be watching very carefully.

This isn't good. Have reservations on the 10th - cancelled. It was via VRBO - the owner has four (4) different locations. He agreed to provide us with a 100% refund. Will let everyone know if that happens...would like to push business his way, he's been pretty easy to deal with.

Truly I feel bad for the residents and business owners...selfishly, probably need to change our plans.

While I agree that the Bahamians aren't the most efficient, I am sure they are getting heavy pressure from the resorts, hotels, ferry, etc. This is peak season for them, if they dont make their money by September most will be in the red. We own a unit in Sands and count on rentals from the summer to cover our cost in the winter. 2 months is not an option

You probably should have just waited. As of late yesterday, both islands have power although the Hilton is running on it's own generator. BPL has additional generators coming in this weekend. Everything should be back to normal long before the 10th.

Two friends of mine from South Florida told me the Hilton generator will only power the Casino and the generators on the way aren't big enough. They also told me the entire island was doing a rolling blackout and "Bimini" is advertising that as the power being back on. Additionally, if the Hilton did get up and running , my friends are of the opinion that the local restaurants/bars/ stores would still be on a rolling blackout. I believe these guys. They are very familiar with the situation and have no reason not to tell me the truth. One of them is there now. I had plans for a June 13 crossing and I canceled mine as well. I feel like the last thing Bimini needs right now is more people plugging in. I hope I made the wrong choice and they get it all worked out this weekend.

Complete power WILL NOT be restored in the near future, rolling blackouts both planned and unplanned will be going on for awhile, per resident on the island. That doesn’t mean you can’t go and have a fantastic time, if you are expecting USA standards, you will be disappointed, power on every Bahamian island could be iffy at any time. Don’t cancel, go support the people of Bimini

We had 5 to 8 hour blackouts on 6/25 thru 6/29 on South Bimini. Looks like this is going to be the new normal for the foreseeable future.

It’s going to be power shedding (rolling blackouts) for the foreseeable future. The busier the weekend the more blackouts we will have to deal with.

Heading over on Wednesday because I already promised the granddaughters and paid for the rental unit. But, it doesn't sound too encouraging with the 4th of July crowd. Maybe there will be enough cancellations. I've been going to the Bahamas for so many years that I consider them my sister country and I definitely want to support the people of Bimini, but the government should be getting off their butts and doing more than they seem to be doing for this island.
