Default Can't get a radio check in Tarpon Springs area anymore

I just bought a new fixed mount VHF and wanted to test it. It will be used as a spare and for receiving only at my house (antenna on roof). I noticed very little VHF traffic this weekend. I decided to check the transmitting function (yes, I know it's not allowed) just to make sure it worked. No luck getting a radio check response on 26, 27 or 16. I assumed it was defective but before returning it I checked the handheld and fixed VHF radios on the boat. No responses there either. Did I miss some memo about marine VHF being obsoleted or something? I do hear some responses to others from Seatow on 16. Is Seatow handling all traffic on 16 now? Their web site claims the automated check system is still on 27, but I had no luck there. Anyone in this area able to use the system ok? I'm only about a mile from the Seatow site.

I leave my kid in the boat and I take the handheld and drive down the road to test both radios on ch 68.

Coast guard is always yelling at people for doing radio checks on 16.

Hail Sea Tow or Boat US on 16. If they respond they will direct you to their working channel where you can do your radio checks.

Iíve not had luck with the automated response in awhile in the Johns Pass area.

As I posted earlier, NO RESPONSE to me of any kind on 16. Nobody is "yelling" at anyone here on 16. That's why I am asking.

Great, now the company answering requests is Tow Boat US. Are these guys doing shifts?

Are you just asking for a radio check on 16? Or are you hailing sea tow or tow boat US on 16? If itís the former, I would not expect any response from a radio check.

Iíve had no trouble with radio checks out of Ft desoto in on my boat! But a few weeks ago it did not work on my brothers boat using the automated system on 26. I could here a lot of chatter from the coast guard but that was it.

FYI here is the response from SeaTow:

Good Afternoon Gary
The automated radio check is usually channel 26 for the Tarpon Springs area it has been down for a few weeks now . We are waiting for equipment to replace hoping to get it up and running soon. Yes we do monitor channel 16 if you hail for Sea Tow we will answer and tell you to switch to channel 78A and we can check your radio anytime .Channel 16 is a hailing and distress channel you can call someone on that channel then switch to communicate with or if you have any kind of distress(sinking etc ) you call the US Coast Guard and report your distress.
Have a happy & safe Memorial Day weekend
Laura Schumann
Sea Tow Clearwater/Port Richey

Sort of interesting because their web site says it is channel 27 !

Last I knew 26 was the Tarpon Springs repeater, and 27 is South Saint Pete.

This. Seems like a lot of the SeaTow automated systems arenít working. I know the working channel for TowBoatUS in my area (ch 19) so I just call them directly.

Another interesting thing about that reply is that every connection that I heard with Sea Tow locally was directed to ch69, not ch78a. So I probably can't trust the information I received.

Local Sea Tow working channel is 78. BoatUs is on 69.

Local Sea Tow radio check channels are 26 in Sarasota, 27 in St Pete, 26 in Tarpon, and 27 in Homosassa. It alternates between 26 and 27 as you move along the coast to avoid getting 2 in range.

Try adjusting the squelch on your radio. You could be getting a response, just not hearing it. As a coastie, fair warning the guys up at sector might respond telling you not to do radio checks on channel 16.

No, not in Tarpon Springs. I hear Sea Tow calling for a switch to 69 all day long. I hear absolutely nothing on 78. TowBoatUs is also using 69.

As posted above, according to Sea Tow the Tarpon Springs auto check has been out of function for weeks now.

What I was asking for is local knowledge for Tarpon Springs as of this week.

Yes I know all that and am a former coastie myself. Been using radios similar in function since 1970. Also, I do hear the CG responding with a warning when others ask directly on 16. I appreciate all the replies but I am looking for anyone using my local service only.
