Default Port st joe

spending a week in destin in August. Thinking of trailering the boat to pt st joe for a day of scalloping. Any recommendations for where to put my boat in? Any other advice? Bringing 3 kids ages 7-11. Thanks

I was just down 2 weeks ago, I don't think you can get to any of the ramps at the state park and I don't think the ramp in town is usable either. The marina was pretty much gone.

what size boat? That will determine where to launch. If smaller bay boat without a bunch of draft you can launch at presnells campground( ten dollar launch fee) which is closer to the scalloping ground but requires a lighter draft on low tide at the end of the channel coming out. they are open presently as I just launched there. Same as always, follow the crowd of boats headed for the scalloping grounds usually by blacks island(scallop the east side of blacks island between the island and the ne side of the bay. Watch your depth as it can get tricky on low tide. It is a very sandy bay without much in the way of rocks, coral or oyster beds so if you do bump bottom it’s most likely ok as it’s mostly sand/grass. If larger cc you can launch at the city boat ramp, run across the bay and head for blacks island area. Don’t be afraid to move around and “find em”. Mostly 2 to 4 foot depths scalloping. Coming from destin would almost be easier to jump back on i10 and get off in Marianna exit and head south rather than going destin, pcb, mex beach due to hurricane and stop and go traffic on 98. Pm me if I can help you with anything else. Love that area! Fishing wise net up some ly’s on the flats and go to the state park flats and fish them on top targeting the potholes in the grass. Also the flats around pig island hold good fish too. Good luck and catch em up!

All of the county ramps and the one at the state park are open. Frank Pate Park in town might be your best bet. City of Port St. Joe, Florida 32456

Default Destin

The traffic from Destin to Port St Joe will be a challenge. Plan on 2-3 hours each way.

The ramp in town by the Hungry Howies pizza is open and in excellent shape. Can handle any size boat. I fished down there 2 days ago. As far as scalloping, go towards Black's Island in the southern (head) of the bay. Will see tons of boats in the water and folks scalloping. Pretty much any where there is grass beds, the potential for scallops exist. Find 2-5ft of water, decent clarity and have at it. The ramp also out on the Cape was open as well. Was shocked, but, it was open.
I was over on the cape side of the bay and got into some good trout. I did have a 6-8ft Hammerhead swim by, less than 5 ft way in 5ft of water...In 20 yrs of fishing there, was the biggest shark I have seen.
