Arrow K & G ... HELP ... HELP ... HELP... LOOKING for WEBSITE GURU ... TRADE TACKLE / GEAR

WHO IS A CODE GURU....... UNCLE KILLER WANTS YOU !!

It is coming to ahead......... I am going to have to get a website and I need help.............. BADLY.

All my tackle, hunting gear, boat parts, scuba gear, etc is getting out of hand. I can safely say in the 20 threads I have running just on THT alone, only 10% of my items are listed for sale.

YOU GUYS ARE MISSING OUT ON A TON OF OTHER DEALS......

I am open to website recommendations and layouts. I like the Tackle Direct website setup I think the best out of most sites I have been on.

If you guys see other sites you like better, now is the time to speak up.

Short list of what I am looking for.

I think I want a site layout like TD mentioned above.

I want to be able to maintain it myself, add and delete product pics, descriptions, etc.

I want to be able to get a " bar code scanner " incorporated into the inventory that will work with the site. That way if a buddy comes over and takes some lures, I can scan it as a sale in the " virtual " website and have it subtract from my inventory. Does that make sense?

ALL SALES WILL GO THRU VIRTUAL SITE regardless of whether it is in person or online. I only want to have 1 inventory.

CC or PP will be accepted, I have both.

I know the inventory BS above will probably be an "out of the box" type setup but with my inventory changing as much as it does and the fact I can't get the same product at the same price, it has to be a "live" inventory so it is accurate for someone purchasing from me.

I don't want to have to unwind an order because I don't have or can't get the merchandise the person thought they were buying.

Payment methods from me to you are as follows after we agree on project cost:

Part of it can be $ and a chuck of it needs to be in product.

I am quite computer literate and can help on some of the setup, I am worthless writing code.

If you are near or on the water or woods, I probably have some toys you will want to add to your toy box.....

I am also buying website domains as I think of catchy ones and have got a few I like so far ...... that will be another thread.

Lets hear some feedback and get some good code guy to work!!

Thanks in advance for all the help.

.

Congratulations on your success. I know nothing about code but I do know something about business and it is nice to see you make such progress.

Alright...........

Talked with a few guys and figured I would throw it out where I am at.

I bought a 1 month subscription from Go Daddy to " build your own site " since that is who I use to register most of the time anyways.

I have used their sh@tty builder before...... anyways....... FRACK THAT.

I don't have the time for that. I could have answered 100 pms by the time I got the basics laid out. WHAT A PIG....

Nauti Boater turned me on to Merchantos for the POS software and it is EXACTLY what I was looking for...... except for the $ 50 per month that is.

He and several other also suggested Shopify for building the site. I like there layouts better than the BS over on Go D.

You can call me a cheap bastard, however, it plays in your favor most of the time, IE, my prices.....

So.............. what should I expect that I am going to have to spend to have the site " hosted " each month if I don't use someone who bundles like Shopify?

Is there a software system out there like Merchantos that isn't a recurring monthly bill?

Keep in mind, I would guess I am up to probably 2,000 - 3,000 DIFFERENT items IN STOCK as of now, not counting all the BS I can order.

Questions:

If I were to go with Shopify for starters and then I decided to leave them, do I loose my website or can I take it with me?

Last thing I want to do is have built this entire thing and then be locked in with the software company I used to build it.

If I do loose it, how do I get one built off of a similar template and keep it for myself?

I got a feeling I am gonna be shipping a few decent size boxes of tackle to someone to work on this........

Thanks to everyone that PM'ed me with input.

Also got a bunch of PMs saying " ABOUT F@CKIN' TIME " or something similar .

Biggest thing is I don't want it built if I can't save or move it if I want or need to......

THANKS FELLAS........

I don't post too much on here but couldn't resist on this one. I know GoDaddy supports a product called Joomla, it's a Linux based CMS that's infinitely expandable, has a great following, and it's FREE. You can buy extensions like Virtuemart which is a full inventory control system for as cheap as $80. Most of the extensions you'll need including things like Facebook, weather, menu bars, forums, comment sections, are all FREE as well.

I've built a few sites using it now, it's great. Then again I'm a bit of a Linux whore(not too much tough!) and you may hate it.

I agree you need your own site. You have a lot of good stuff at great prices. But it is hard to see it all on a message board like this. On that note I will shoot you a PM. I need a deal on some line for an upcoming sailfish tourney.

This may sound like a stupid question, but has anyone looked into building a site through Yahoo? If so, what do you think? Does anyone have any experience with running Yahoo sites?

Thanks,
Pete

Looks like for right now it is going to be too much of a pain in the @ss to do a POS system and virtual at the same time in the beginning.

Opinions on these 2 hosts.

SHOPIFY vs BIG COMMERCE

Looks like unless I do a custom build, I can't move hosting as I now understand.

Then again, if I do a custom build, I don't get the big box hosting option from the 2 suppliers above.

Looks like BIG has more bells & whistles but it costs a touch more also.

I don't want to personally build anything...... don't have the time or $.

Guess I will do a big box for now and then get someone to start tweaking it for me.

Who do you like above?

Leaning towards BIG because I can supposedly backup the entire site from them, not on Shopify.

Also BIG has FTP access along with CSV..........

Thanks

I looked at the Big Commerce site and it looks like a decent deal. However, what is not clear is what their fees are per transaction. I only see monthly fees and most other places also charge a percentage on each transaction. If there were NO transactions fees I would think they would brag about that.

Have you looked at Amazon's webstore? A lot of people have been going toward them as a solution and it looks pretty easy to set up and manage.

According to their site FAQ section........ " Do you charge transaction fees? No! We don't believe in taking any of your profits. As a business we understand that variable costs are annoying, so you'll never pay any transaction fees for your BigCommerce store. "

I just did a demo account with BIG 2 C if I would like it.

Didn't take long start building and it was pretty friendly.

Tried calling them, obviously too late today.

Will give them a ring monday.

I will have to resize EVERY pic I have.......

This is gonna be a HUGE project for me to do solo. I am definitely gonna get some help just loading all the BS info for me.

I am getting more excited about it after spending the last hour playing with a mock website.

Traditionally, I never use Amazon since they don't take PayPal when you try to check out.

I am sure there are a ton of guys like me that NEVER even search on there because they force you to use their payment system.

If it is tied to there searches with the fees and payment restrictions, I wouldn't work with them.

That being said, I will look into them.

I tolerate PP and all the accounts I have with them. I WON'T join another payment site when I have a balance in PP accounts.

I was going to ask you if you found out anything about the transaction fees, but I saw in your post above that there are none. That is a pretty good deal! Keep us posted on how it goes as far as building your site.

Been up till 5am the last 3 days changing and writing code......

Site is looking pretty good. I am doing a demo site with BIG and I am going to go with them, at least for now.

I am not going to buy the site and do the official transfer until the end of the trial period to give me a few weeks of programming on their nickel.

This is gonna be a FRACKING HUGE project to get all the items loaded.

There is just no good way to get this done quickly. I didn't realize how much sh@t I had in stock till I started entering some of it.

Trying to figure out shipping since I don't have local UPS or Fed Ex at a reasonable rate.

Scared to trust the USPS estimator but I just might have too.

Lean on Fedex.

They have set me up pretty well, and will give you some spectacular rates if you have enough volume. You can also garner better rating and discounts when you buy your bulk items work it into the sale to use your fedex account number.

Also, I dont know how far along you are, but I forwarded this link to some people who might can help you out with hosting and web development.
