Default Any value/interest in a Merc 300XS?

Buddy of mine runs a 21 Lanier Cat, with a 300XS. The boat is insanely fast, tops out at 89mph. He uses the boat mostly for flats fishing. The 300XS is just too noisy for shallow water.

It has less than 200hrs on it (he bought it last year as a leftover/demo/used with 27hrs, probably has more like 100-120hrs).

It also has a brand new gearcase, 0hrs.

He is switching over to a 4 stroke. He would also entertain trade offers Im sure.

not trying to bust up your spot, but why does he have a gearcase with 0 hours on it? Hit the sand in the shallows at high speed? Ripped the gears out the back? Just wondering. With the full story, it will give people an idea what to look for, like a bent shaft going into the gearbox, OR he just ran it hard and blew up the gears.

He shredded the gearcase last year in October, which ended his season. The prop shaft seals were badly worn, and it had quite a bit of water in it. Eventually, the forward gear tried to jump out of the case.

He just picked up a new gearcase this winter, its not even installed yet. I have the engine and gearcase in my shop. I assume the gearcase comes with a Merc warranty of some kind. Not sure how long of one on a "race" part. Its a Torque Master. Not sure of the prop he is running, I know its a 3 blade Merc.

Not to take a stab at the Merc guys, but I would have to believe a run of the mill Yamaha 4stroke is a little more reliable than the Merc 300XS. Granted, the Yamaha will NEVER touch the XS in performance. But in our area, you dont get many days with "80mph water". Plus, he mostly flats fishes and sight casts for stripers. You can hear that Merc from 2 miles away. I think my F225 is quieter on muffs than his is at idle in the water.............

And beyond going into NADA, what are these motors worth? I know it all comes down to what someone will pay for them.

I for one, think a VMax SHO will look sick on the back of that cat!

BIG TIME EDIT!!!!

Sorry guys. The motor is a 300X, not XS. This is the single throttle body, standard injection 2 stroke. Not the DFI model! Oops. Sorry, I dont know my Mercs!!!

I'd be interested in a 300x. Got any pictures and what State is it located? They can vary greatly in price depending on the condition.

I can get pics in a day or two. Its on the motor stand in my shop, in between a couple other engines. I have to pull it out to get a good pic.

Its in CT. He bought it with 27hrs. Not sure how many he put on last season. Boat is still shrink wrapped with no batteries in it, cant get hours off gauges right now. He thinks he remembers seeing 190 or so at the end.

Brand new gearcase, not even installed yet. Not sure what they cost, $4000? Its a Torque Master with fat shaft.

Overall, engine is in great shape.

I would not need the gearcase. Price it either way, i could sell the gear case. Shoot me a price by pm when you decide what its worth. A good photo of the cowl and a few of the powerhead would be cool.
