Default How old is THT?

No, not your age you stupid old coots! I mean the website itself.

I know it was started by Mr. W and then sold off, but when did he start it?

Is there a way to find some of the first posts? It would be interesting to see some of the discussions from back then.

Any of the original (say first 100) members still here?

My profile says 2004 but I joined a few years before that as “ Still Learning” but a computer glitch made me change my name. So, it must be sometime before 2001. At least 18 glorious years and loving every minute of it. Except for camp.

First day was around Feb 21, 2001. There are several of us "founding" members still active.

I joined in September 2001 as 35Bertram and somehow my name quit working hence the new name but obviously THT is older than 2001.

I think that's right on the money! We "forgot" to celebrate this year.

Date on mine now is 11/2001. But that computer glitch that was mentioned got me too. I know I joined several months prior to the 11/2001 date it shows now. But no idea really how long prior to that I joined.

Did you happen to notice one of them being about eight stories tall and a crustacean from the Paleozoic era?

February 26, 2001 is my join date, there has been a few changes since then. Several of us left another forum when Wiley started this one.

I was there.... this is how it started. We were all on another boating forum.... I can't remember the name, dang it. Anyway, the moderators of the forum would take down posts and threads that their sponsors didn't like. They took advertising money form big marine names and if something was negative to one of their advertisers, it disappeared.

So, there was an uprising of people who were very upset that they could not speak about issues freely. Can you imagine having an optimax or fitch and not being able to talk about it?

So, Wet and Wiley decided to start their own forum and named it "The Hull Truth" in a nod toward freedom of discussion. In fact, early on, they didn't take money from advertisers! It was all donations by members. It became too expensive to run purely by donation as things grew, so they evolved, but always making sure there would be no censorship.

I think this started in 2000, but it may have been late 1999.

The site did very well, because it was sorely needed. A way to get advice and to learn.. priceless.

https://www.thehulltruth.com/members/wet-n-wiley.html

His profile shows that wet-n-wiley joined 02-21-2001, so that would be my guess as to the official start of THT.

I think I remember reading about activity on a site that became THT, so maybe Wiley started the site earlier, then named it THT.

Early 2001 would be my guess.

When I joined it was $20 to get a "Wheel", but that wasn't mandatory. There was a fair amount of member shaming to pony up the $20 if you hadn't, but Wiley didn't put up with much of that.
I do recall the first server swap. It was a bit of a CF as the site was completely offline for a few days. Imagine in today's World this site being offline for 2 or 3 days.
